So you think if the Lakers finished the season 20-62 and the Clippers finished the season 62-20 with Dwight that the Lakers would still be the focal point of LA and the national media? The fans and media are going to put the most focus on the team that is winning.

The Lakers would get more attention for sucking than the Clippers would for winning

They're not going to be dethroned as the head basketball team in LA after their long history of greatness because the Clippers have one nice year.

Yeah, BC is right. All sports media LOVES to talk about great ones tanking. I mean, hell, they still don't shut up about Tiger Woods. Great ones falling makes for great news on boring days.

It wouldn't be a one hit wonder.

longer it takes them to recover the more the media will cover their downfall.

I don't buy that one bit.

If the Clips kept winning and the Lakers kept losing eventually the media would move to the Clips. The media follows the big story, as my mass comm teacher said the "hurricane", and at some point mediocrity becomes boring and predictable.

Then you have the fans. Who are the fans going to pay to see? The 20 win team with just a bunch of average to below average players, or the 60 win team that has the big names and the faces that people know. If ESPN had to choose between the 20 win Lakers team who is only drawing barely 10,000 people a night, or the 60 win Clippers team that is drawing 20,000+ a night, where do you think NBA is going? They are going to the hot place, the hot story.

but the idea is the same. One of the greats on a downward spiral.

PS. Are we really fucking arguing over this shit having a discrepancy over this topic?

Poor Orlando...I liked what Nik Anderson said though. Dwight needs to speak up and say what he needs to say. If he wants certain guys on the team, say so.

Just sad to see all these star players only wanting to go to teams with other superstars.

Yep, it's great for large markets but it's going to drive the league into the ground.

Lol, the league has been driven by the stars and having very few teams who are legitimately able to win the championship since forever.

It's nobody's fault but ownership as to why these guys won't stick around. Look at the Hornets roster, they have no flexibility because of Okafor and Ariza's shitty contract. The Magic have no flexibility because of taking on Vince and Rashard and then flipping them for Hedo and Gilbert.

If these teams weren't handing out horrible contracts to players that don't deserve, they would be able to actually bring in talent.

Which is why the NBA has been the least competitive league of the 3 major ones over the course of history.

Yep. I'm not talking about the media hype or fan interest, none of that matters.

I'm talking about the league revenue. We already know the number of teams that did not make money last season, and it's because of reasons like this one, and if the new CBA doesn't fix it it will only get worse. The amount of teams that don't attract more than 15,000 fans a night has more than doubled in the last five years.

Contract. It's pretty clear that the talent level in the NBA can't support this many teams.

The talent level in the NBA is higher than it has ever been.

The two problems are all the stars want to play on big market teams so they can get the media attention, media hype, endorsements, live the way they wish to live, etc that you can only get in big markets. So now you have these teams that are stock piling talent because all of the role players want to follow these guys. Look at the final four teams last season:

Dirk Nowitzki
Jason Kidd
Tyson Chandler
Jason Terry
Corey Brewer
Caron Butler
Brendan Haywood
Shawn Marion
Peja Stojakovic
Kevin Durant
Russell Westbrook
James Harden
Serge Ibaka
Kendrick Perkins
Lebron James
Dwayne Wade
Chris Bosh
Mario Chalmers
Mike Miller
Derrick Rose
Carlos Boozer
Joakim Noah
Ronnie Brewer
Luol Deng
Taj Gibson
Kyle Korver

That's just from four teams, each team averages about 6.8 players that are true big time impact players. Seven players and that's not other players like Kurt Thomas for the Bulls who are solid rotational vets, some teams can barely put four legit NBA type players on the court. Then you have other teams in the NBA who's rosters just suck because they can't attract any stars or role players.

Nothing is wrong with the talent in the league, it's just the talent distribution in the league is horrendous. But here is the kicker, look at the owners of those teams. All have extremely deep pockets and can just spend and spend and spend. Not every team has that luxury. That's why a hard cap and league revenue sharing was so important. They didn't get a hard cap, and that's a failure imo, but they got the next best thing which is good for something I guess. It won't make the league nearly as competitive as it needs to be, but it should help a little.

Everybody but 6-7 of those guys are complementary players. They're not guys you can build around, there aren't 30 players in the NBA that you can build around and that's the problem.
