Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Pirates are interested in free agent infielder Ramon Santiago.
Not only do the Pirates like Santiago, but they like him enough that they're evidently interested in him as an everyday shortstop. Santiago is a slick fielder but has a career .249/.316/.342 batting line and has never started more than 84 games in a season. The Pirates are looking for a new shortstop after declining Ronny Cedeno's option for 2012.

Jorge Sedano of 790 AM The Ticket in Miami reports that free agent Jose Reyes signing with the Marlins is "almost a done deal."
This report should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Not only would it be hugely surprising if Reyes signs with the first team he visits with, but we don't anticipate that it will be Sedano that breaks the news of the signing of one of the biggest offseason fish (pun intended). Nevertheless, it's clear that the Marlins are a real player for the shortstop. If he is brought in, Hanley Ramirez would have to change positions.
like it says in the qoute take this with a huge grain of salt, but never know

Royals Acquire Jonathan Sanchez For Melky Cabrera
By Tim Dierkes [November 7, 2011 at 12:08pm CST]

The Royals acquired lefty Jonathan Sanchez and minor league starter Ryan Verdugo from the Giants for outfielder Melky Cabrera, announced the team.

Sanchez, 28, may have been a non-tender candidate for the Giants after a disappointing 2011 season that saw him walk 5.9 per nine innings and miss significant time with biceps tendinitis and a sprained ankle. The southpaw is tough to hit and has big-time strikeout numbers, but control has always been a problem. In Sanchez, Felipe Paulino, and Danny Duffy, Royals GM Dayton Moore has strong strikeout potential for three-fifths of his 2012 rotation. Sanchez projects to earn $5.2MM in 2012, after which he'll be eligible for free agency. That he was traded for one year of Cabrera shows how much his trade value slipped during the '11 season. Sanchez was set to battle Barry Zito for the Giants' fifth starter job next year.

Cabrera had the opposite experience in 2011, as he had a resurgence after being non-tendered and signing a $1.25MM free agent deal. The 27-year-old hit .305/.339/.470 with 18 home runs in 706 plate appearances for the Royals, playing mostly center field. UZR suggests he is a below-average defender there, though there seems a good chance the Giants continue to use him in center. If so, Andres Torres could become expendable. Cabrera is projected to earn $4.4MM in 2012, after which he'll be eligible for free agency. With the deal, the Royals opened up center field for prospect Lorenzo Cain.

Verdugo, a 24-year-old Double-A southpaw, went to Kansas City along with Sanchez in the deal. Baseball America ranked him 25th among Giants prospects prior to the season, describing him as a deceptive lefty who misses bats but has minus command. Verdugo was a starter in college and returned to that role last year.

From MLBTR

Jonathan Papelbon's desire to set the market for closers was never a secret -- it's now a reality. The Phillies have agreed to sign the 30-year-old to a precedent-setting four-year, $50MM deal that establishes the record for guaranteed money for a reliever.

The contract, which is pending a physical, will include a reachable fifth year vesting option for 2016. The Phillies appeared to have a deal with Ryan Madson earlier this week, but talks fell through and the sides didn't complete the rumored four-year, $44MM deal. Papelbon's agents at ACES stepped in and the Phillies have their closer.

Papelbon posted a 2.94 ERA with 12.2 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 in 64 1/3 innings for the Red Sox in 2011, saving 31 games. He's a Type A free agent who will cost the Phillies their first round draft pick in 2012, assuming the upcoming collective bargaining agreement doesn't change draft pick compensation for this offseason. Boston will obtain the 31st overall pick in next June's draft unless the Phillies sign an additional Type A free agent with a higher ranking than Papelbon. If the Phillies lose Madson to another team after offering him arbitration, they'll surrender one pick and gain two.

Whats up with the Marlins this year. They are so cheap and frugal every year and now all of a sudden they are looking to sign Reyes, Cespedes, and Pujols. We'll see if people start to show up for the new stadium.

It would also be interesting to see where they would put Hanley if Reyes were to sign with them, I would think that he would move to 3rd base.

Oh and check this shit out, lol:

Fortunately I've paid close attention to stories popping out over the years about cheap teams with poor attendance being under scrutiny for receiving large amounts of $$ from Luxury Tax & League Revenue sharing system, and basically not putting that money back into the payroll to improve the team.

Simply put, Marlins have always gotten an odd look from everyone else. Horrendous attendance numbers, and now all of a sudden they can afford a brand spankin new stadium and are going after every top FA.

Maybe there's more to it but it seems fishy to me.

PS Marlins are supposedly making a run for Ryan Madson & Mark Buerhle as well. Just a luxury-taxed Juggernaut waiting to be unleashed.

You guys haven't been paying a lot of attention to the Marlins the last few years have you? They've been pocketing the revenue sharing that they get from other teams and were basically told by the MLB that they have to start spending. They're going all out this off-season to put the best quality team on the field to draw in the fans to the new stadium.

They're going to be competing for a Wild Card spot too if they can snag Reyes, Cespedes and Buerhle or some other quality pitcher.

Dodgers and Kemp close to a deal, how can you extend someone when you don't have an owner?

Maybe just reaching an agreement and waiting for the owner to approve when they get one?
