The Oakland Athletics are looking for a third baseman and the most likely avenue would be the trade market, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Adam Kennedy is an impending free agent, Eric Chavez is coming off another back surgery and it is unclear if top prospect Brett Wallace is ready to take the job.

Slusser writes that the Royals might be willing to deal Alex Gordon or Josh Fields while Brandon Wood could be available if Chone Figgins re-signs with the Angels.

The Blue Jays and Mariners have discussed a deal involving first baseman Lyle Overbay, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The writers say Overbay "would welcome" a deal, and note that he's been coming up in multiple rumors. Overbay almost went back to Arizona in a deal for Chris Snyder before the Blue Jays backed out.

At $7MM next year, Overbay is reasonably priced. Nonetheless, the Jays seem to prefer to go in another direction at first base. Aside from the Mariners and D'Backs, the Orioles, A's, Rangers, Braves, Mets, and Giants might have openings at first.

The Minnesota Twins don't want to see Joe Mauer playing for another team. His contract runs out at the end of next season so the Pohlad family ownership has got its best negotiator, team exec Jerry Bell, on the job to try and work out a long-term extension this off-season, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Talks have supposedly started with the catcher's reps already. "Everything in time ... it'll work out - I hope, and I'm pretty sure," said Bell. "I feel good about it because I think he wants to stay here and we sure want him to be here, and all of his teammates want him to be here."

The 26-year-old is expected to be named the American League's most valuable player, which will drive his price upward, obviously. It is thought that Mauer could get $25 million annually on the open market.

Willingham might be on his way out of Washington

Washington is drawing strong trade interest in left fielder Josh Willingham, but may not be willing to part with him, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Willingham turned in a slash line of .260/.367/.496 with 24 HRs in 502 plate appearances in 2009.

The post identifies the Braves as a team that likes the 30-year-old, but says that they have concerns about his back and are less than enamored with his defensive play. Willingham, they suggest, might be a better fit in the American League where he can be a DH. Earlier this month, Tim took a look at Willingham and other left fielders that could be dealt.

Eric Wedge: The former Cleveland manager is a possibility for the Mets' bench coach job, according to FOX Sports, and the speculation is that it could be a prelude to the managerial gig since Jerry Manuel has one year left on his contract. According to FOX, Bob Melvin and former Orioles bench coach David Jauss are also up for the bench coach job.
