Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports believes that the Rangers are getting close to acquiring SP Roy Oswalt from the Texas Rangers.

Calcaterra says that the two may be close, however the big roadblock is convincing Major League Baseball that they can take on Oswalt's salary before the team is bought.

A little while ago, the Rangers filed for bankruptcy and are expected to be sold in the near future. The Rangers would be a good fit for Oswalt, as they are a very young team with a deep farm system, and Oswalt would be a good piece for them to make a run at the Playoffs.

This year with the Rangers, Oswalt is 4-8 with a 3.16 ERA, having to fight hard behind a terrible lack of offense in Houston. Oswalt turns 33 in late August, and has career numbers of 141-78, 3.23 ERA, and averages 182/51 SO/BB over the course of his 9 1/2 seasons in the MLB.

Rumor has had it lately that if the Astros deal Oswalt, they want the other team to take on most, if not all, of Oswalt's contract -- which is close to $30M.

I'm guessing part of the deal would probably be Chris Davis + a few prospects. Maybe Salty as well.

Chris Davis is pretty bad and Salty has proven to be an overrated prospect. Hopefully for the Astros case they don't get either.

I don't think Chris Davis is that bad. He's only 24 and hasn't reached his full potential. He would be a solid replacement for Berkman if he also gets traded.

Davis is basically a young Russell Branyan.

to be honest I don't see him going to the Rangers. With their financial situation I just can't picture the league allowing this deal to go through, and since the Rangers would be taking on so much of his contract, the Astros would get much less in return.

Simply put, they would be unwise to try to make a deal with Texas go through and try to explore other options -- I still think he goes to the Dodgers.

The Dodgers don't want to pay neither the prospects nor the cash to acquire him though

Dodgers wont trade for him unless the Astros pay for his entire contract.. The Dodgers gave the Indians one of the best prospects in the MLB just to pay for Casey Blake's contract..

Well right now a lot of it is speculation -- I know the Dodgers are reluctant to spend money, but seeing as they won't have to carry Manny's ridiculous contract next season (assuming he doesn't resign) I would assume they would have the money and the ability to acquire Oswalt if they are serious about winning this year -- but like I said this is all just speculation because we have no idea how much of Oswalt's contract the Astros would be willing to eat up, and how much talent it would take.

The more they eat, the more talent they'll want so it's basically going to come down to the right balance -- we just don't know which team will bring out the best balance that'll work for both sides.

I think the Dodgers need him seeing as their rotation has been kinda shaky this year, but financially they may not do it.

A Rangers official says there is no truth to rumors that the team is close to a deal with the Astros for pitcher Roy Oswalt.

A report on MSNBC.com went as far as to report that the two sides have agreed upon the players who would be exchanged.

Texas general manager Jon Daniels didn't respond directly to the report, but said, "You can probably figure this one out."

tigers wont go after roy cause we already have major contracts to deal with and we dont wanna give up youth for him either.
