Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports believes that the Rangers are getting close to acquiring SP Roy Oswalt from the Texas Rangers.
Calcaterra says that the two may be close, however the big roadblock is convincing Major League Baseball that they can take on Oswalt's salary before the team is bought.
A little while ago, the Rangers filed for bankruptcy and are expected to be sold in the near future. The Rangers would be a good fit for Oswalt, as they are a very young team with a deep farm system, and Oswalt would be a good piece for them to make a run at the Playoffs.
This year with the Rangers, Oswalt is 4-8 with a 3.16 ERA, having to fight hard behind a terrible lack of offense in Houston. Oswalt turns 33 in late August, and has career numbers of 141-78, 3.23 ERA, and averages 182/51 SO/BB over the course of his 9 1/2 seasons in the MLB.
Rumor has had it lately that if the Astros deal Oswalt, they want the other team to take on most, if not all, of Oswalt's contract -- which is close to $30M.
