Panthers sign Muhammad to pair with Smith, scrap Carr

Muhammad

Also Tuesday, the Panthers released quarterback David Carr, who disappointed in his first season as a backup to Jake Delhomme.

Carr was let go a year after he signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Panthers following a five-year stint as a starter in Houston. Carr struggled so badly when he took over for the injured Delhomme last season that he was eventually demoted to third-string.

"He did everything we asked, but unfortunately it didn't work out like anyone had hoped or expected," general manager Marty Hurney said. "David is an excellent person and we wish him the best."

Released by the Bears last week, Muhammad played the first nine seasons of his career (1996-2004) with the Panthers before signing with Chicago in 2005. After his release, the 12-year veteran generated interest from four teams, but quickly focused on rejoining the Panthers, given his familiarity with the franchise and the fact he still owns a home in the Charlotte area.
Muhammad, 34, will sign a two-year contract, the financial details of which were not immediately available.

"I did talk to Steve and he felt like he needs another complement on the other side of him," Muhammad said at a news conference. "He kind of coerced me into coming back. He welcomed me back with open arms. ... We're excited about playing again with each other. We've always maintained our friendship outside of football."

The Panthers appeared to be his first choice from the beginning.

"Moose from day one urged me to do my best to return him to the Panthers," said agent Joel Segal, who declined to reveal financial figures.

The addition of Muhammad should provide the Panthers with a wide receiver who, despite his age, will be capable of reducing some of the double coverage that Smith faces on a weekly basis. Typical of the disproportionate distribution in the Carolina passing game over the past few seasons, Smith had 87 receptions in 2007, and no other Panthers' wide receiver posted more than 38 catches.

Only once in the past four seasons -- in 2006, when Smith had 83 receptions and Keyshawn Johnson had 70 -- have the Panthers had two wide receivers with more than 50 catches each.

Even in a down year for Muhammad in 2007, the veteran had 40 catches for 570 yards and three touchdowns. The receptions represented the fewest for Muhammad since 1997, his second season in the NFL, but that total was affected by the lack of consistency that the Bears experienced at the quarterback position, where they used three different starters.

Bringing Muhammad back for a second stint also gives the Panthers another veteran presence in a locker room said to have lacked leadership in 2007.

Carolina officials are hopeful that second-year wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, a second-round choice in 2007, will advance sufficiently in 2008 to challenge for a starting role. If that's the case, Muhammad could end up being the No. 3 receiver, working primarily out of the slot. But if Jarrett stumbles again, after appearing in only seven games as a rookie, when he registered six catches for 73 yards, Muhammad could claim the starting spot opposite Smith.

"If I'm the No. 3 receiver, they're going to have a real good No. 3 receiver on the field," said Muhammad, who is 64 yards shy of 10,000 yards receiving in his career.

Muhammad represents a big target, works the middle of the field well, and has always been a productive red zone receiver.

In 172 appearances, including 160 starts, Muhammad has 742 catches for 9,934 yards and 56 touchdowns. The former Michigan State standout, selected by the Panthers in the second round of the 1996 draft, has seven seasons with 60 or more receptions and three years with 1,000 yards receiving.

Muhammad's best season was in 2004, with the Panthers, when he had 93 catches for 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns. That season earned Muhammad the second Pro Bowl berth of his career. He earlier went to the Pro Bowl in 1999.

The durable Muhammad, who has missed only 20 games in 12 seasons, has started in 14 or more contests in all but one of the past 10 seasons.

Saying he's motivated to win a championship for Charlotte, Muhammad was eager to get to work. He already worked out a deal with tight end Jeff King to wear No. 87 again.

"Everybody is extremely excited that he's back," Hurney said. "He brings an attitude. He brings a work ethic. He was somebody that was extremely highly regarded when he was here. It was a sad day when he left and it's a happy day now that he's back."

Seven-year veteran safety Dwight Smith, released by the Minnesota Vikings last week, on Wednesday found a new home in the division, reaching agreement with the Detroit Lions on a two-year, $5 million contract.

Smith

The deal reunites Smith with Lions' head coach Rod Marinelli and defensive coordinator Joe Barry, both of whom were assistants on the Tampa Bay staff when the veteran safety spent the first four seasons of his NFL career as a standout Bucs' defender.

Smith, 27, will add big-play instincts and aggressiveness to the interior of the Detroit secondary.

The Lions will represent the fourth different franchise for which Smith has played, and his fourth different club in five seasons, but there is no denying he remains a top-flight talent with unique "ball" skills. He appeared in 14 games for the Vikings in 2007, with 13 starts, and had 51 tackles, four interceptions and nine passes defensed, teaming with Darren Sharper to comprise one of the NFC's best safety tandems.

But Smith had some off-field problems during his two seasons in Minnesota, including a pair of arrests, and at times he disagreed with the philosophies of coach Brad Childress and with the club's defensive schemes.

Blessed with some of the best hands of any defensive back in the league, and with terrific closing speed, especially on passes thrown in front of him, the feisty Smith still retains excellent cover skills and figures to fit well into the Tampa-2 style the Lions employ.

The former Akron standout, a third-round choice of the Bucs in the 2001 draft, began his NFL career as a nickel cornerback before moving to safety after his first three seasons in the league. In stints with the Bucs (2001-2004), New Orleans (2005) and Minnesota (2006-2007), he had appeared in 107 games and started 76 of them.

Smith has 432 tackles, 22 interceptions, 57 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries for his career.

In Tampa Bay's victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, Smith had two interceptions and returned both of them for touchdowns.

The contract to which Smith agreed Wednesday includes a $350,000 signing bonus and base salaries of $1.35 million for 2008 and $2.25 million for 2009. There are reporting bonuses of $300,000 for this season and $250,000 for next, and a roster bonus of $500,000 in 2009.
very good pick up i'd say this is pending on how he plays with his new team i think he'll do fine in his new role.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have cut Jevon Kearse.
The Eagles released the former rookie of the year Thursday. The 31-year-old defensive end failed to live up to the lofty expectations when he signed as a free agent in 2004.
Kearse recorded 3 1/2 sacks in 14 games last season and saw his playing time diminish late in the year. He missed most of the 2006 season with a knee injury.

Early in his career, Kearse was one of the NFL's most feared pass rushers. He had 36 sacks in his first three season. He earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1999.

Kelly signs seven-year, $50.5 million contract with Raiders

The Oakland Raiders stepped forward Thursday on the eve of free agency and signed Tommy Kelly to the largest contract ever given to a defensive tackle.

Kelly

Kelly, a defensive end scheduled to move to defensive tackle this season, signed a seven-year, $50.5 million contract Thursday that has $18.125 million in guarantees. In the first three years of the deal, he will make $25.125 million.

The Raiders' plan is for the 300-pound Kelly to replace the retiring Warren Sapp as the three-technique defensive tackle in the Raiders' 4-3 defense. The move is similar to the one made last year by the Detroit Lions' Cory Redding, a franchise player who signed a seven-year, $47.5 million deal last summer, the highest among defensive tackles at the time.

Like Kelly, Redding was an effective run-stopping end with some pass-rush ability so the Lions believed he could move to tackle, work next to Shaun Rogers and create a solid 1-2 interior defensive tackle punch. The Raiders believe Kelly can emerge as one of the league's best interior defenders.

Kelly gained the confidence of Raiders coaches by averaging five tackles a game as a starter at defensive end. He's had 13 career sacks, and the Raiders believe he can be a pass-rushing force at defensive tackle because of his quickness.

First, though, Kelly has to get healthy. He's coming off a torn ACL that limited him to seven games last year. He had 30 tackles and a sack in those games. Kelly was going to be a highly coveted defender in free agency because he could play defensive tackle in a 4-3 or defensive end in a 3-4.

He came to the Raiders in 2004 as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State.
wow he got a big contract lets see how good he can be with the number one role . idk they might have gave him to high of a contract.

What is expected to be a hot free-agent market continued to sizzle Thursday when Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Davis became the second free-agent receiver to come off the market to re-sign with his team.

Davis agreed to a four-year, $16 million deal that included $8 million in guarantees. On Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans re-signed Justin Gage to a four-year, $14 million deal. They came off the market, but Randy Moss continues his negotiations with the Patriots.

What made the 28-year-old Davis valuable was his deep speed. He caught 33 passes last year for the Texans and had a 17.7 yard per catch average. In 2004 with the Browns, Davis had a 26.0 average and the following season with New England, he had a 21.1 average.

There was some thought Davis could have received a $5 million-a-year deal on the open market. In the end, he decided to stay with the Texans and hope to start on the other side of star receiver Andre Johnson.

Panthers close to trading Jenkins to Jets; FB Hoover re-signs
Nearly a year after starting the process, the Carolina Panthers are about to unload disgruntled defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. The Panthers and New York Jets have been in heavy trade discussions about the three-time Pro Bowler and a deal could be completed Friday, according to multiple sources. The Panthers tried to trade Jenkins before last year's draft but pulled back when they couldn't get a first-round pick in return.

It's likely they'll willl settle for less (probably a third-round choice) this time to get rid of Jenkins, who, in July, said he didn't like living in Charlotte. He also didn't endear himself to the coaching staff by skipping last year's voluntary workouts to spend time with family in the Washington, D.C. area.

Jenkins may not be returning to the Panthers, but the team came to terms with fullback Brad Hoover on a three-year deal. Agent Tim Irwin declined to give financial details. Hoover, 31, has spent the past eight seasons with the Panthers after earning a spot on the roster as an undrafted rookie out of Western Carolina. Hoover played in all 16 games last season and started 12, used mostly as a blocker.

The Jets are looking for a bigger defensive tackle to man the middle and it became clear after last season that Dewayne Robertson wasn't who the team wanted in that role. Jenkins, 28, is listed at 6-4 and 335 pounds, but his weight became an issue after he missed much of the 2004 and 2005 seasons with knee and shoulder injuries. He admitted to getting close to 400 pounds while he was sitting out but got his weight under control and played well enough to make the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season. The Panthers are scheduled to pay Jenkins a $1 million roster bonus next week.

Lions, Saints appear favorites to land Vilma
Linebacker Jonathan Vilma is moving closer to being traded away from the New York Jets, and he may get the word on his new team by as early as Friday.

This week, Vilma has visited with the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions, and they appear to be the two teams ready to pull off a Vilma trade for a draft pick. Terms of the draft choice compensation is unknown.

A bone chip from a pre-existing condition from high school led to a November surgery that ended Vilma's season and effectively ended his Jets career.

He only started jogging recently, but hopes to be running at full speed within a month. Vilma is in the last year of his contract.

Rams part ways with WR Bruce
Wide receiver Isaac Bruce, the last remaining player from the team's 1995 move from Los Angeles to St. Louis, was released after each side failed to reach a lower salary number. Bruce, 36, was scheduled to make $5 million this year, including a $2 million roster bonus due Friday.

A year ago, Bruce was cut but then was re-signed by the Rams. This time, St. Louis decided to part ways, leaving the Rams with Torry Holt and Drew Bennett as their top two receivers. Also released was quarterback Gus Frerotte, the team's backup the last two seasons.

The Rams saved $6.9 million of cap room with their releases. Both were entering the final years of their contracts. The move frees up $1.9 million heading into free agency while leaving the Rams with only two quarterbacks, Marc Bulger and Brock Berlin, on the roster.

Lions re-sign CB Smith to 2-year deal
Detroit Lions president Matt Millen made his second move in two days to fill up a changing secondary by re-signing cornerback Keith Smith.

On Thursday, Smith agreed to a two-year deal for $5 million and may have a chance to compete for a starting job. On Wednesday, the Lions signed safety Dwight Smith to a two-year $5 million contract.

A starting opportunity was opened last week when the Lions released Fernando Bryant. Bryant started 16 games last year at cornerback on one side while Travis Fisher started 13 games on the other side. Fisher is a free agent.

Smith, 27, was a third-round choice of the Lions in 2004.

Chiefs re-sign Colquitt, but Law likely to be cut
The Kansas City Chiefs kept punter Dustin Colquitt off the restricted free-agent market, as ESPN.com learned the team has signed him to a contract extension that makes the three-year veteran one of the NFL's highest-paid players at his position. Colquitt, 25, signed a five-year contract worth $8.5 million, which includes a $2.4 million signing bonus.

While Colquitt will be a Chief next season, it seems Ty Law's career in Kansas City may be over. The Chiefs have told Law he will be released, likely within the next week, according to a team official speaking on the condition of anonymity. Linebacker Kendrell Bell, tight end Jason Dunn and defensive lineman James Reed are also expected to be released.

The official declined to be identified because the players had not yet been released. The moves were first reported in The Kansas City Star.

Kansas City also released 31-year-old offensive lineman Chris Bober, the seventh Chiefs veteran older than 30 to be released in the past couple weeks. An eight-year vet, Bober saved the Chiefs $1.78 million in cap room by having his contract terminated. Overall, the Chiefs have cleared more than $15 million of cap room.

Bills re-sign four, release veteran CB Thomas
Kiwaukee Thomas' contract was terminated by the Buffalo Bills, further depleting the team of experienced cornerbacks on the eve of free agency.

Safety Jim Leonhard and reserve running back Shaud Williams will become free agents on Friday after the Bills elected not to issue qualifying offers to retain their rights.

The Bills did retain the rights to defensive tackle Jason Jefferson by making him a qualifying offer. And they re-signed four players: tight end Tim Massaquoi, safety Dustin Fox, receiver Scott Mayle and defensive tackle Corey Mace.

Cowboys officially sign LB Thomas
Linebacker Zach Thomas officially joined the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday after spending his entire career with the Miami Dolphins.

The $3.3 million, one-year deal had been confirmed last weekend by agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Thomas was released Feb. 14 by the Dolphins, part of the massive rebuilding project being overseen in Miami by new vice president of football operations Bill Parcells.

The seven-time Pro Bowler missed much of last season because of concussions and migraines. Coincidentally, the Cowboys made room on their roster by releasing fullback Oliver Hoyte, who gave Thomas a concussion when Dallas played Miami in September.

Titans waive Givens, tender 7 offers
The Tennessee Titans cut ties with wide receiver David Givens and tendered one-year contracts to seven restricted agents including All-Pro kicker Rob Bironas, tight end Bo Scaife and starting right tackle David Stewart.

The Titans signed Givens to a $24 million, five-year deal in 2006, but the former Patriots receiver played in only five games that season before tearing his left ACL.

Bironas and Stewart are expected to be attractive targets when free agency opens Friday. If the Titans don't match any offers, they would get a second-round draft pick for Bironas and first round for Stewart.

The Titans also tended offers to safety Vincent Fuller, cornerback Reynaldo Hill, fullback Casey Cramer and offensive lineman Daniel Loper.

-- The Associated Press

Cards give trio qualifying offer
The Arizona Cardinals tendered one-year qualifying offers to defensive end Antonio Smith, cornerback Eric Green and offensive lineman Elton Brown. All three are restricted free agents, which means they have until April 18 to sign the offer. In the meantime, they can negotiate with another team but the Cardinals have a right to match any offer or receive a draft pick as compensation.

Green and Smith, starters last season, were tendered first-round offers of $2.07 million. The Cardinals would receive a first-round pick if they sign with another team and that offer is not matched by Arizona. Brown's tender offer of $927,000 would reward Arizona with a fourth-round selection, the same round in which he was drafted.

The Cardinals declined to tender offers to four restricted free agents: linebacker Darryl Blackstock, tight end Tim Euhus and receivers Jerehme Urban and Ahmad Merritt.

The team also extended offers to three exclusive rights free agents -- cornerback Michael Adams, tight end Troy Bienemann and wide receiver Jamaica Rector.

Engelberger re-signs with Denver
The Denver Broncos made the first move to restore their defense by reaching a two-year deal to keep defensive end John Engelberger.

Engleberger, 31, has been with the Broncos for three years, but last year was his most productive. He started 15 games and had 41 tackles after serving as a backup defensive end in his first two seasons.

He came to Broncos in 2005 from San Francisco in a trade for cornerback Willie Middlebrooks.

Steelers make 1-year offers to 4 players
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made one-year contract offers to four restricted free agents.

The team made offers to wide receiver Nate Washington and guard Chris Kemoeatu, reportedly for more than $1.4 million each, and offers to long snapper Greg Warren and offensive tackle Trai Essex, reportedly for just over $900,000 each.

Essex is entering his fourth NFL season. The third-round draft pick in 2005 played in three games in 2007. Kemoeatu is also entering his fourth season. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2005 draft and played in 15 games last season.

Warren has handled all the long-snapping duties for the Steelers since he was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2005. Washington ranked fourth on the team with 29 catches for 450 yards and five touchdowns last season.

-- The Associated Press

Eagles, Reed agree to deal
The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a one-year deal with safety J.R. Reed and tendered a one-year contract to restricted free agent cornerback Joselio Hanson.

Reed, originally a fourth-round pick out of South Florida in 2004, played 15 games for the Eagles in 2007 as a reserve safety and kickoff returner. He had 23 tackles, including a career-high 11 against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 2. Reed also returned 31 kickoffs, averaging 22.6 yards per return last season.

Reed was scheduled to become a restricted free agent on Friday.

Hanson joined the Eagles in 2006 after originally signing with 49ers as a rookie free-agent in 2003. He played in all 16 games last season, serving mostly as a nickel cornerback and had a career-high 45 tackles. For his career, Reed has averaged 22.3 yards per kickoff return and has played in 35 games (4 starts), logging 50 tackles.

Packers' Williams headed to Cleveland
Packers defensive end Corey Williams was surprised a week ago when he was slapped with the franchise tag. All it meant was that he was going to a new franchise. Once the trade deadline begins, Williams is reportedly going to the Browns for a draft choice -- possibly a second-rounder -- and sign a lucrative six-year deal.

Williams was hoping to hit the free-agent market, but the Packers decided to protect themselves from losing him without compensation. The franchise tag bought the Packers time to see if there was a market for a talented defensive tackle on a team deep at the position.

Williams is expected to sign a deal worth more than $6 million a year when he gets to the Browns, who have been looking to upgrade their defensive line. The early reports are that he will get a six-year, $38 million contract, but there was no conformation that those numbers were correct.

Former Bengal Williams agrees to sign with Vikings for $33 million

An all-night negotiations session with the Minnesota Vikings produced a deal that has made Madieu Williams a formal Bengal and now one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL.

Williams

Williams, 26, agreed to a six-year, $33 million contract Friday morning after his agent, Ken Zuckerman, and Minnesota officials worked through the night to get a deal done. As both sides spelled out the final language of the contract, Williams headed to the airport Friday morning for a flight to Minneapolis to sign the deal.

The contract tops Deon Grant's five-year, $31.8 million deal that was the highest of the free agent safety class of 2007. Williams was considered one of the top safeties in free agency this year and his presence will fill a big need in the Vikings secondary.

Williams is known more for his coverage skills than his hitting, and the Vikings wanted to shore up some of their pass-coverage deficiencies.
i like this deal the vikes needed a ss since they lost smith to the lions and they got a good one i think he's going to be a good fit .

Linebacker Kawika Mitchell took a chance in free agency last winter and ended up with a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New York Giants.

On Friday, Mitchell chased the money, and landed a multi-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. Terms of the deal weren't immediately available.

The five-year veteran started all 16 games for the Giants last season after being the team's only notable free-agent addition a year ago. He finished with 87 tackles, 3½ sacks and an interception -- which he returned for a touchdown against the Bills.

He also had a fumble return for a TD and added two sacks in four playoff games, including one in the Giants' Super Bowl win over New England.

The Bills are aggressively trying to improve their defense. Mitchell's signing helps their linebacking corps, and the Bills have Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud in their building Friday for a visit.

Stroud was told Thursday by the Jaguars that they might trade him.

-- John Clayton, ESPN.com. The Associated Press also contributed to this report.

KEEPING TIGHT END JACKSON IN THE FOLD

Coach Mike Shanahan is a big fan of tight ends in his game plan and loves to have as many as he can at his disposal.

With that in mind, the Broncos worked out a two-year deal to keep tight end Nate Jackson, who technically is the team's third-string tight end. Daniel Graham is the starter and top blocker at tight end. Tony Scheffler is the pass-catching tight end. Jackson is the pass-catcher who is considered a role player but a valuable part of the offense.

Jackson received a contract that pays him roughly $1 million a year, but there are escalators in the deal that could allow him to make more depending on his production.

The Broncos also re-signed defensive end John Engelberger. Engelberger received a two-year, $4 million deal.

BUCCANEERS SPEND SOME DOUGH ON FAINE
Armed with $44 million in salary cap room, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent very little time spending some of their rare bounty, reaching an early Friday morning contract agreement with unrestricted free agent center Jeff Faine, who played with the New Orleans Saints the past two years.

Contract details were not immediately available, but league sources said the deal will make Faine one of the NFL's highest paid centers and surpass the six-year, $36 million contract that another former New Orleans center LeCharles Bentley, signed with Cleveland as a free agent in 2006.

The move upgrades the interior of the Tampa Bay offensive line, where Faine will replace 10-year veteran John Wade as the starter. The Bucs have worked hard to build the line unit in recent years, principally through the draft, and Faine will be flanked on the interior by a pair of young, ascendant guards in Davin Joseph and Arron Sears.

Considered a future Pro Bowl player by Bucs coaches, Joseph was a first-round choice in the 2006 draft and Sears was selected in the second round in 2007.

Faine, 26, has started in all 66 of his appearances in five NFL seasons. Over the last four years, he averaged 14.3 starts and started in 30 games in two years with the Saints. He was acquired by New Orleans from Cleveland in a 2006 trade on draft weekend after playing with the Browns the first three seasons of his career.

JENKINS DEAL DONE
The Carolina Panthers have traded three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets for third- and fifth-round draft picks.

The deal Friday ends a tumultuous year for Jenkins. He was placed on the trading block last year and angered the coaching staff for being overweight and missing offseason workouts.

Jenkins played all 16 games last season but made only 2½ sacks. Near the end of the season he said he wasn't sure he wanted to return to Carolina next season.

At 6-4 and 349 pounds, Jenkins could move to nose tackle in the Jets' 3-4 defensive scheme.

Eagles sign Samuel to six-year contract

PHILADELPHIA -- The Eagles have signed free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel.

The Eagles agreed to a six-year contract on Friday with Samuel, who spent the last five seasons with New England and had 16 interceptions the last two years.

Samuel also tied the NFL career playoff record with three interceptions returned for TDs.

Philadelphia had only 11 interceptions last year and failed to score a defensive touchdown. Its defense had an NFL-worst 19 takeaways.

The Eagles will likely trade or shift positions for either Lito Sheppard or Sheldon Brown.

Samuel, a two-time Pro Bowl selection with two Super Bowl rings, has 22 career interceptions. He was protected by New England last year by the franchise player tag.
Great signing by Philly.

good pick up since young retired i hope he can be a key player for years to come but he needs to work on his pass rushing since he only had 2 sacks last season .
