because you don't rip apart your team for a player you have a very good shot at signing in the offseason.

The nuggets are asking for too much because they have 0 leverage. That is why. If they had 6 other teams that Melo WOULD sign an extension with, lining up with offers, then yes, the Nuggets asking price would be reasonable.
