He's been one of the best pitchers in the game this season, hasn't been in the past.
how can you say that?

this is his 3rd straight year with 200+ K's

2008 was a rough year, he had an ERA over 4
but he has a 3.56 ERA in his career

since his rookie year of 06(only 2 starts in 05) he's behind CC and Halladay in WAR
6th best FIP, 14th best xFIP
5th best K/9
6th most CG's
2nd most K's
(minimum 1000 innings)

you know what, you're right. he hasnt been one of the best pitchers in baseball until this year. silly me

I'd agree with BC. JV was always a good pitcher, but up until this year I wouldn't have called him the best pitcher in baseball by a longshot.

And I would agree, wins are overrated. But the fact Verlander has a shot at 25 wins, I don't think in this case it is overrated. He pitches, we win games.
i never said he's been the best, i said ONE of the best. not many you'd take over him even before this season

and no. just because he has a shot at 25 wins doesnt mean they're not overrated specifically this year for him. still overrated

Ok, but Verlander's ERA is in the low 2 lmao.
Once again, he pitches, we win.

explain Tim Lincecum
2.46 ERA, but a 12-10 record
or Felix last year

Verlander only has 20 wins because of his team's offense

His offense doesn't produce runs for him.

OK, sorry Mexi. I forgot that Verlander doesn't deserve his wins because wins are overrated. He might as well just have a 5 era or something, cause wins are that overrated. Might as well just be a terrible pitcher, cause wins are overrated.

Lol, yeah those 20 wins have nothing to do with the fact he is the best pitcher in baseball.

I think Verlander has deserved 20 wins.
And regardless of wins, he deserves the Cy-Young.
But bottom line is, he has pitched well enough to earn 20 wins to this point. Overrated or not, he put the team in position to win 20 games this season. That is a nice feat.

It would be a different story if he was a bad pitcher, who just got a dick load of run support. But he is the best in the game this season. He has earned 20 wins.

you guys are 8th overall, 5th in the AL in runs

he gets 5 runs of support a game
that means he could have an ERA of 4.5 and still have 20 wins

Just because he "could" have that ERA and win 20 games doesn't mean he would.

my point is, you could throw a no hitter and get the loss
you could not throw a pitch and get the win

wins are a team stat and shouldnt any value placed on them for an individual pitcher

Okay you can give up 7 runs and get a win as well. I don't know anyone here that is taking great value in wins. Personally, though, I think when it's a guy like Verlander you don't have to completely discount them. He is a main factor in winning games.

Then you look and see how Justin Masterson is #5 in the AL in ERA and is only 10-8 and realize that the stat is meaningless..
