As anticipated by most, including Villanova coach Jay Wright, Wildcats junior lead guard Maalik Wayns is going to put his name into the pool of available candidates for the NBA draft, the Daily News has learned.

Villanova is expected to make an official announcement later today.

That doesn't mean the 6-2 Roman Catholic product will leave a year early, but several sources have indicated that they believe it's a strong possibility.

Wayns, who led the team in scoring at 17 points per game and made second-team all-Big East despite missing several games late in the season with a knee injury, has until April 10 to take himself out of consideration and return for his final season of eligibility because he hasn't hired an agent. Until then he can work out for NBA teams to try and determine what his stock might be. He can also interview with teams and have an NBA committee of general managers evaluate his worth.

At this point it doesn't appear that he projects as a first-round pick, which would ensure a guaranteed contract.

Some aren't sure he'll be selected at all, but it only takes one team. And some have speculated that even if he has to go overseas or play in the Developmental League, Wayns could simply be ready to move on and start making money. Those people have said he might have made his mind up to do this last year, after electing not to test the waters at that time.

The Wildcats went 13-18 this season with no seniors and three junior starters, missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. They had five first-year players.

OMAHA, Neb. -- Florida center Patric Young told reporters Thursday that he intends to return for his sophomore season instead of entering the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-9, 247-pound Young has been projected as a late first-round pick by most draft analysts. He’s averaging 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in his first season as a starter.

“That’s always great news,” Gators coach Billy Donovan said. “I think Patric has learned a lot this year. I don’t think this year was as easy for him as I thought it was going to be. I think a lot of times when you’re a player that’s in a role, and all of a sudden you go from a role to a primary position, your impression of what you think your role is going to be like might not match up to it.

“I think Patric ... probably realized he’s here to grow, and he’s much better today than he was a year ago. I think next year he would be even better than he is this season.”

Young has plenty of time to change his mind, however. The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NBA draft is April 29.

Florida, the No. 7 seed in the Midwest Region, takes on No. 10 seed Virginia Friday at the CenturyLink Center.

Heard about Moe but didn't want to post anything because it isn't official. Also we've all heard MKG say he's gonna stay but we'll see if that holds true or not.

Also seems pretty likely Fab Melo declares.

St. John’s has scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. Monday at Madison Square Garden where freshman Moe Harkless is expected to end all speculation about his future and say he will apply for the NBA Draft.

Harkless, the Queens product who was named Big East Rookie of the Year, saw his pro stock soar in the past month, according to some NBA scouts.

According to services and websites that track the draft, he is projected to get picked in the first round somewhere between No. 15 and No. 25. The Daily News first reported March 9 that in the wake of his rising draft stock, Harkless was leaning toward going to the NBA.

Harkless averaged 15.5 points, sixth best among freshman nationally. He averaged 8.5 rebounds, second nationally among freshmen. He also was named honorable mention all-Big East.

If Harkless chooses not hire an agent, he will have the option of removing his name from the draft and could return the Red Storm. Once a college player hires an agent, he or she no longer has amateur standing.

A Harkless departure does thin the Johnnies but it also could make the St. John’s program more attractive to some recruits, who look at the track record a school has for developing players into pros.

St. John’s already has point guard Jamal Branch, a Texas A&M transfer, enrolled and ready to join the team in the middle of next season. It has received verbal commitments from 6-8 blue-chipper JaKarr Sampson from Brewster Academy (N.H.) and 6-3 Felix Balamou from Our Savior New American (L.I.).

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin is expected to attend the news conference. He told the News March 9 “Moe knows that regardless of what his ultimate decision is, we enthusiastically support him. He knows that either outcome will help the Johnnies cause as we continue building the program.”

The St. John’s player drafted was Omar Cook, who was Orlando’s second-round pick in 2001.

I was going to once the season ended. For the most part, a lot of people go back and forth and say they're gonna stay then don't. Once things start to become official, I definitely will though.

Royce White will hire an agent and enter his name in the NBA draft, forfeiting the remainder of his NCAA eligibility.

He averaged 13.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists in 2010-11 and posted a strong performance Kentucky in the NCAA tournament , finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists in a 87-71 loss.

The 6-foot-7, 270 pound forward is projected as a first-round pick.

Michigan basketball’s worst fear might be coming to fruition.

Freshman point guard Trey Burke is inquiring about his NBA draft status.

The Big Ten's co-freshman of the year and Michigan’s leading scorer and assist man is seriously considering leaving, his father, Benji, told the Free Press today.
