I started a GroupMe grouping over at TGP a few months back and people loved it. It goes through spurts of inactivity but always seems to be used fairly often, and it didn't detract from usage at the site. I'm thinking we could try it over here at SI. Now, it comes with the unfortunate task of deciding whether or not you trust other people with your phone #, but I don't gather that people are all that sensitive and paranoid here.

Its definitely used in the US; I think both are stupid tbh.
 
But that was my main thought as well, about it being stupid. Board doesn't have enough posts? Let's just have all our discussions on our phones

I could see it being an alternative to using IPBs Private Messaging, but nothing more than that.
