NEW YORK -- The Yankees and Nationals completed a minor transaction on Wednesday, with New York acquiring outfielder Justin Maxwell in exchange for right-hander Adam Olbrychowski.

Maxwell, 27, batted .144 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 67 games for Washington last season. He also played in 66 games at Triple-A Syracuse, batting .287 with six home runs and 21 RBIs.

Maxwell was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Thursday. He has a career batting average of .201, with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 122 Major League games over parts of three seasons.

Maxwell figures to join the Yankees' organization as outfield depth in a group that includes Colin Curtis and Greg Golson, both of whom spent time at the big league level last year.

Olbrychowski, 24, was a fifth-round selection of the Yankees in the 2007 Free-Year Player Draft. Olbrychowski pitched most of last season at Class A Tampa, going 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA in 30 games (one start).

He also made two relief appearances at Double-A Trenton, where he had no record and a 2.08 ERA. In four Minor League seasons, Olbrychowski is 16-17 with a 4.17 ERA over 100 games (35 starts).

In order to create room for Maxwell on its 40-man roster, New York designated outfielder Jordan Parraz for assignment. Parraz was claimed off waivers by the Yankees from the Red Sox on Dec. 17.

Low-risk, high-reward type thing. This guy has 5-tool potential, just can't seem to put it together at the major-league level.

I really fail to see how this is a low, risk high reward deal. He will most likely just be an emergency call up.

Because if he ever actually reaches his potential, he could be a good player in the big leagues. He has 30-30 type potential (home runs-stolen bases)

I know what 30-30 means....

It's just that he is already 27, and hasn't done anything.

That's why it's low-risk, we gave up nothing for him and if he ever manages to figure it out, no matter how unlikely it is, it could be rewarding.

Still I doubt there is any reward. What you are saying is you can call any player a low risk, high reward player.

No, someone who is as toolsy as he is is a LR-HR type. He's had success at the highest minor-league level, just hasn't translated to big league success.

This is more like a low risk, who cares type of deal...
