I think I posted one a while ago saying he signed a 10 year deal, guess it was just speculation.

The Minnesota Twins and Joe Mauer have agreed on the richest contract ever for a catcher, an eight-year, $184 million deal that will keep their MVP in the Twin Cities well into what may be a Hall of Fame career.

Mauer, who turns 27 next month, becomes the second-highest paid player ever after leading the AL in batting average, on-base and slugging percentage last season. The deal includes a full no-trade clause and begins in 2011, meaning he could be a Twin through the 2018 season.

The agreement comes on a day the Twins could use some good news. Their All-Star closer, Joe Nathan, will miss all of 2010 because of elbow surgery. If the Mauer extension talks dragged into the regular season, it might have cast a pall over the opening of Target Field, the Twins' much-anticipated open-air stadium.

Instead, there will be much to celebrate, as the Twins clearly are intent on using enhanced revenues from their new stadium to retain their new core of superstars, after a decade in which they developed Torii Hunter and Johan Santana into All-Stars, only to see them become too expensive to retain.

That won't be happening with Mauer, a native of the Twin Cities whose forthcoming signature on the new deal will ensure he'll retain his rock-star celebrity there.

He would have gone to the Red Sox. like it was set in stone IMO if this didnt happen

Yankees are crazy, but long deals to ARod, CC, Tex, Jeter? i dont think they can do 1 more. thats too much even for them.

good news for the Twins though. off sets the Nathan news

Hell no. I'm glad someone is finally loyal to their team. I'm happy the Twins found what could be their franchise player (What happened to Morneau?). Guess this answers the question if he was going to resign or not. 8 years is a lot more than I expected though.

Pretty sure he would of went to NY lol.
Boston really doesn't NEED a catcher with Victor Martinez.
Whereas Posada won't be along much longer in NY.

They got the cash and I'm sure it would of happen. At least more set in stone than it would of been with Boston.
However it is now irrelevant either way.

I think he would've went to Boston over NY if Boston offered. But I'm sure he would've stayed with the Twins over both because he seems like that guy who is loyal.

Well yeah, but NY's need for a catcher would make them want Mauer much more.
Which is why I believe in a bidding war, the Yankees would not lose. Especially over their biggest rivals.

Yankees have a couple of young catchers they really like, but if any team had the money to sign Mauer they would offer regardless of their catcher.

The league would have to do some discussing if Mauer was signed for a lot of money by the Yankeesimo.

Only thing they could do is set a CAP. Which will take a while to set in place lol.
So nothing would really happen.

Only way there will be a cap is if the owners lock out the players for a year.

I might not even mind it if it was for the better of the league.

Great news for baseball. Score for the little guys. Take that Yankees and Red Sox and LA teams. You can't always get the best small market talent

If he would of went to the Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets it would of been the death of baseball. It's nice to see someone be loyal to their team, and where they were brought up.

Good for Mauer. Although I wouldve loved to see him in a Mets uniform. The guy is obviously from the area and has lived there his whole life and he feels that the Twins can trully build a winner around him. This guy in my honest opinion is the most athletic person in the world. Do your research and you'll know what I mean.
