After shocking the league and making the playoffs as a sixth seed in 18-19 with two young all stars on the books. Most fans in the Spurs fanbase expected another playoff experience after adding playoff tested veterans in Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard and Robert Covington amongst other additions in the Alamo. Instead it turned into a nightmare season for the fans and the front office. Dwight Howard didn’t make the game easier for Bagley and forced him to play out of position at the power forward spot. Kelly Oubre couldn’t find a rhythm with splitting his minutes with Covington. Wade clogged up the spacing and as one of the league’s worst shooting teams that wasn’t a bonus for a team with Ben Simmons running point guard.
In addition there were rumors that the Klutch camp wasn’t pleased with the way the season was going and wanted to explore other options. The Spurs camp denied the rumors at first but after all-star break the relationship between the two parties had become unsalvageable. The front office and coaching staff were searching for young talent to replace the all star and agreed to move him for Dennis Smith Jr and Michael Porter Jr. The hopes of those inside the franchise is that MPJ can become the consistent stretch shooting combo forward they’ve been looking for. This offseason is huge for MPJ and where he’ll stand in the Spurs plans in the future. DSJ is someone the franchise is high on but they’re also wary of his future contract situation.
Did Klutch Sports play a role in the Simmons and Spurs split?
Now that the Spurs have concluded their draft, they’ve added sharpshooting Josh Christopher to give them some outside shooting and perimeter defense. Both were aspects the Spurs were sorely lacking in last season so they’re counting on him to be a contributor immediately in those two categories. Spurs also wanted to have a contingency plan at the point guard spot with concerns over the impending DSJ free agency. They traded back into the draft giving Brooklyn cash to select the flashy point guard Jerry Kunze from Tennessee State. Kunze was considered a top five point guard prospect to many but dropped due to concerns over his greed and love to go for the flashy play instead of the right play. His role for this upcoming season is still to be determined. There are some in the front office who believe with a good training camp he could compete to start and others who see him as a G-League guy.
Can MPJ make the leap from prospect to contributor this upcoming season?
In conclusion the Spurs organization is placing a bet on themselves and player development to uproot what seemed to be a positive turnaround. We’ll see how it fares but after the playoff run we owe them a chance to see this through.
