Tuesday, the team named Becky Hammon an assistant coach, making her the first female paid by an NBA team to be an assistant.

"I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement. "Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."

for those who don't know, she played for the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars

I think this is good, as well as the players respect her enough.

I was boutta say, they hired seemingly the one attractive WNBA player.

Good for the Spurs, good for her. Hopefully she gets every opportunity to rise through the ranks like any other assistant.

I actually think Maya could play in the NBA. Obviously not as a starter, but as a bench piece? sure.

Lets not get carried away here, she's 6'0 and lacks the athleticism and quickness that would be required of her to even be a 12th man (woman?)

You'd probably have to be the best shooter in history to have any chance at making the NBA as a woman.

There was a lady that was an assistant coach for the cavaliers. I read it the article I clicked on when I first seen this one Facebook. I don't remember exactly which page I like posted it, but shes not the first female assistant coach in the NBA.

EDIT: However she is fine, and shes in her late 30's... damn... damn... damn

Ah, didn't know that. It did say something about her being an assistant in the WNBA at the time too so that makes sense. For them to not pay her though is a little messed up, but I guess if I was a female and I got the opportunity to put that one my resume I'd do it for free too.

she's the best female basketball player i've ever seen.

She's won 2 titles in college, in the wnba, and in china, not to mention a Gold Metal. She shot 45% from 3 last season; its not like she relies on her physicality like griner.

obviously i'm biased, because otherwise I wouldn't give a single shit about a women's basketball player. But I think she's talented enough to compete for a roster spot
