Scherzer First Since '86 To Start 13-0

Toronto— Well, that had a little bit of everything.  And, to the Tigers’ liking, a rare second road victory in a row.
 
Max Scherzer became the first major league pitcher in 27 years to start a year 13-0, Alex Avila stayed hot in his return from the disabled list with a three-run home run and the Tigers beat the Blue Jays, 6-2, on a tension-filled Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.
 
By the time this one was all over, the teams —big-time rivals years ago — weren’t exactly feeling all lovey-dovey.  Tigers second baseman Omar Infante left the game with a left-shin contusion after being taken out by Colby Rasmus in what the Tigers thought was a dirty slide. Then, later, Torii Hunter was hit by a pitch, didn’t like it and, still irate over losing Infante, said as much.
 
“That,” said Alex Avila, “is as angry as I’ve seen him. “I don’t want to be on that side.”
 
The benches cleared, and both benches were warned, as is standard protocol — but there were no further notable incidents.  Well, unless you count the Tigers winning a second game in a row on the same road trip for the first time since May 21-22 as a notable incident.
 
Oh, and Scherzer, of course, still refuses to lose.  “It’s hard to believe, to be honest with you, that somebody is 13-0 in this day and age,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “But he is, we’ll take it, we’ll accept it and we’ll be happy for him. And hopefully he goes 14-0.”
 
 

 
Insane season he's having. And it's not even just the wins, everything else about his game this year has been on point. ERA has been great, still moving down hitters like last season, walking a lot less batters. I gotta try and see a few of his starts this month.

Could care less about a pitcher's record but he's definitely had an awesome season thus far. 3.09 ERA with a better fip of 2.62. His stuff is pretty nasty as well.

Exactly. The record would be impressive if it actually meant something. His strikeout totals for example are more meaningful. Filthy stuff, been better than Verlander so far

Yeah, end of last year he really matured as a pitcher. He definitely "figured it out."
Always had the good stuff, was never consistent with it though. Awesome to watch him mature over the years.
