Good for them, the Royals are no longer the laughingstock of the AL. This reminds me of what the A's did last year to make that run for a championship.

Think he's referencing how they traded for Shark and Lester last season.

Royals didn't give up any elite prospects for Cueto, though.

It's just a weird comparison because it didn't work out for the A's at all

Its the comparison of small market teams going all in knowing full well that its their best and only shot. The Athletics dismantled that team after it failed and this Royals team has many vital pieces going into free agency which they wont be able to all keep.

Gordon is a free agent after this year, Holland is due for a big raise through arbitration as well. Then you have Cain, Moustakas, Hosmer, Duffy, and Escobar hitting free agency in 2017.

But the Royals made the WS last year so it's not their *only* shot

2 years ago the Red Sox won the World Series and today their in last place in the division. 3 years ago the Tigers were a perennial powerhouse and their now 11.5 games back of the Royals. Longterm sucess in baseball today is fleeting. Add to the fact that the Royals arent a major attraction for high caliber free agents like NY, Boston, or LA. This is their big push for that championship.

I would say they have this year and possibly next year as a window.

Whether or not it worked out for the A's is irrelevant to the comparison, though. Both teams wanted to acquire a high-end starter to stack their rotation for the playoffs.

The Athletics believe in statistics so CC hates them, so he had to get a shot in.

That's fine. There's also plenty of OTHER examples of teams doing that too. Hence why I thought it was a weird comparison given that he had a lot of better examples to choose from.
