According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, the Red Sox have told assistant general manager Ben Cherington that he will be the team's next GM.
As expected. Cherington, 37, has worked with the Red Sox in various capacities -- including a brief stint as co-GM in late-2005 -- dating back to an internship in 1997. The New Hampshire native served as Theo Epstein's top assistant for each of the past three seasons. He will have plenty of important decisions to make in the wake of the Red Sox historic collapse, including finding a replacement for Terry Francona as manager and whether to bring back Jonathan Papelbon and David Ortiz.
