I'm sure most of you know the Competition Committee put forward the proposal and NFL Owners voted 28-4 to PASS it. Only the Vikings, Ravens, Bills, and Bengals voted against the overtime rules change...which only applies to the playoffs.

Now if the team that wins the OT coin toss scores a TD on their first possession, game over, as always BUT if the team that wins the OT coin toss only scores only a FG in their first possession, then the other team gets a possession. Now if the other team puts up a FG in that possession, the game goes on under regular sudden death rules BUT if the other scores TD in that possession, game over.

So basically the team losing the coin toss in OT only has a shot if the winning coin toss team doesn't score a TD in their first possession.

I really don't like change at all. I think if the NFL is going alter OT rules, then they need to replicate the NCAA OT rules. At the same time, shouldn't whats good for the post-season be good for the regular season?

i kinda like the new rule change. i hate the nfl OT rules and i get that they want to stay traditional, so this is a happy medium.

but why only playoffs? that doesnt really make sense to me either

I don't like the idea of the overtime being decided by the fate of a coin toss...which is why I have never agreed with that idea. There's more to winning a game than just a coin toss. As we all know, there's 2 sides to football and whether your playing offense or defense on the field...you have to freaking play. Why is such a big deal made about the overtime coin toss but nobody ever mentions the coin toss before every game? Do teams just stop playing defense after the 4th quarter? Of course its too easy to drive far enough downfield in OT to put up the game winning FG but recent seasons have shown us that NFL placekickers are becoming less and less reliable in the clutch.

I really hate the NCAA's overtime rules, I feel like its way too close the endzone, way too back and forth, but I agree that whatever changes the NFL makes...those changes need to apply to every game.

so should the coin flip be gotten rid of at the beginning of the game too?
in basketball you have a tip off.
in baseball, home team bats second.
in hockey, you have that stick slapping whatever.

how do you do it in football? how does OT and the regular game start?

Like I said, there's offense and defense...regardless of which you start with, play better than the other team and your gonna win. I don't think starting off on offense in sudden death is any kind of advantage. The first possession in football is no different than the last. Play defense, get the ball back in the hands of your offense, and expect to win.

I like this rule change, I hate how if u win the coin toss all you really have to do is make it past half and kick a field goal. This way it makes the field goal a little less valuable and makes OT much more interesting.

I think I hsve to wait and see how it plays out in the playoffs. This might make the playoffs a lot more interesting, cant wait to see an OT game.
