Injuries in the NFL

Every year injuries affect the NFL. Injuries are a part of the game so we all know they happen. This NFL season we have seen some pretty major injuries affect the play of some NFL teams. I will break down the key injuries for the NFL and how it affects their play calling and the adjustments they have been forced to make.

Marshal Yanda- Season-ending knee injury caused this starting Right Guard to be added to the IR. He has been the anchor of the offensive line, and the whole offensive line will have to play better to fill this gap. Rookie QB Joe Flacco will need protection, after a solid start, the Raven’s top pick has hurled 7 interceptions and only one touchdown pass.

Dawan Landry and Samari Rolle – Both injured with neck and shoulder injuries. Big loss to the Ravens pass coverage. The Defensive line and LBS will need to pressure QB’s to force less time in the pocket.

Carson Palmer- this is a pretty big hit for the Bengals offense. Not playing well as it is, they know have to depend on backup Ryan Fitzpatrick to get their offense rolling again. Palmer has an elbow injury that has forced him miss the last couple weeks and maybe more to come. The Bengals with the addition of Cedric Benson need to get the ground game going and take the pressure off this unstable quarterback.

Bob Sanders – the 2007 defensive player of the year was injured in week 2. Sanders went down with a high ankle sprain but Sanders also went under the knife and had arthroscopic knee surgery. They are not rushing Sanders return. This is a pretty good hit to the Colts defense, anytime you lose your playmaker and defensive captain that spot needs filled.

Brodie Croyle – Out for the season and Damon Huard wearing a bandage on his throwing hand this will lead the chiefs to use their 3rd stringer who is ranked 34 out of 34 NFL quarterbacks Tyler Thigpen. The already struggling chiefs will need to find a whole new game plan, so if there any out of work quarterbacks out there, stay by your phone.

Tom Brady- perhaps the most shocking injury of the season, the Patriots are without the Call Boy. Star Tom Brady went down with a knee injury in the season opener against the Chiefs. This has affected their complete game. Under the helm Matt Cassell has big shoes to fill, and personally I feel that he hasn’t to terrible of a job doing so. Losing some games since Brady’s injury, the pats are still a good team and will find ways to win.

Laurence Maroney- Another blow to the once explosive Pats offense. Maroney was put on the IR Monday with a shoulder injury ending his season. This loss takes away the running game now, with Sammy Morris back there; teams can really get at the quarterback. Morris will do a decent job taking this role, but don’t look for a pro bowl season out of him.

Rodney Harrison – Can there be any more trouble for the Pats this year, Harrison was carted off the field with a knee injury on the final play of the third quarter in the MNF against the Broncos and did not return.

Willie Parker- Missed three straight games now with a Knee Injury. Was expected to play against the Bengals last week but hurt it again while working out on his own. Third Down back Mewalde Moore will fill this spot, Moore has not started a game since 2005. Big Loss for the steelers here. They depend on Willies outside running to keep the safeties honest.

Vince Young- Went down with a Knee injury and was replaced by the aging Kerry Collins. The undefeated Titans seem to be playing just fine without Vince underneath the center, there strong running game has excelled since Young’s absence.

Anquan Boldin – Underwent surgery to repair a sinus fracture. This at first seemed to be a pretty big lose for the cardinals but they rebounded and played very well beating buffalo and dallas without boldin in the lineup.

Tony Romo- Romo broke his pinkie finger on his throwing hand and will miss at least 3 games this year. Big loss for the cowboy’s offense, which just added WR Roy Williams and now, has to let Brad Johnson take the helm at QB.

Roy Williams – the hard hitting safety Roy Williams is out for the year with a Broken Forearm and will miss the remainder of the season. The 5 straight pro bowler not being on the field is a pretty good loss to the cowboys, he is there defensive enforcer across the middle and the outside run lanes.

Terence Newman- Star CB Newman missed the entire preseason and season opener because of a groin injury, and then played in three games before getting hurt again. This time newman will miss at least another month after having surgery for a sports hernia. This loss affects the secondary that is not playing up-to par this year.

Jon Kitna- The leader of the Lions offense is out for the season with back injury. This hurts the lions even more now they traded away WR Roy Williams. Someone will need to step up big time for the lions and hopefully they can win some games by playing good defense.

Reggie Bush- bush is expected to miss 4 weeks with a knee injury. This won’t hurt the saints I don’t think too much, besides Bush’s punt and kick returning position. The saints are deep at running back and have two running backs left to get the carries.

To wrap this all up, this NFL season has been infected with injuries all over the NFL. I just highlighted the key injuries this season so far. Most teams have rebounded just fine and some haven’t. We will see come playoff time that is prepared to win. Thanks for reading this article and look for more to come in the future.
