Giants ace Tim Lincecum asked for $21.5M in salary arbitration Tuesday and was offered $17M by the club, according to an ESPN.com report.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner's request neared the record amount sought in arbitration. Houston pitcher Roger Clemens asked for $22M in 2005.

San Francisco's offer was the highest in arbitration history, topping the $14.25M the New York Yankees proposed for Derek Jeter in 2001.

lmao i hope he gets what he;s asking for

he really wants to the FA market. no need to sign long term yet and might as well go for gold with the 21.5M he's asking for

This is a FA signing which the Mets would do. Tims gonna get paid big time and I dont blame him, he has a near spotless record of achievements.

The Giants appear to be focusing on short-term deals with Tim Lincecum after he rebuffed an offer of at least $100 million over five years.

Lincecum, who has gone year-to-year so far, seems more likely to wind up with a two-year deal now rather than sign a contract into his free-agent years.

It is thought that Lincecum seeks a deal for seven or eight years but would be content to do a one- or two-year contract if no megadeal can be accomplished.

He is believed to have countered San Francisco's five-year, $100 million offer with a much higher deal.

It has been reported that the Giants have offered Tim Lincecum a contract worth more than $100 million, but they appear more likely to lockup Matt Cain with a long-term contract.

Team officials are only saying that talks are "ongoing" with Cain, but there is said to be a fair amount of optimism they can keep him on a longterm deal for under $20 million a year.
