For every 10,000 or so players who arrive at spring training amid reports that they’re in the best shape of their life there’s someone for whom the opposite is true.

Today that someone is new Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:

Bryan Hoch @BryanHoch
#Yankees RHP Michael Pineda said he reported to camp around 280 lbs. and needs to lose 10 lbs. this spring.

Last season Pineda was listed at 6-foot-7 and 260 pounds, so walking into camp in mid-February at 280 isn’t such a big deal, but it’s refreshing to read something that suggests not every single baseball player got into great shape during the offseason.

Incidentally, the one-two punch of CC Sabathia and Pineda has to be the largest duo in baseball, right?

Damn, not a good start for Pineda, goes to show you the work ethic and determination of someone is how the report to spring training. I remember exactly at this time last year CC dropped like 20 pounds or so and he had a great year last year. Dude is getting paid millions and its unbelievable how poorly these guys take care of their body sometimes.

Sabathia came to Spring Training last year skinny (by his standards) and put all the weight back on by the All-Star break, right around the time he started sucking. But that was also when we used a 6-man rotation, which he and every single Yankee fan hated, so you can't really draw any conclusions from it.

Pineda will be fine, he'll get in shape during Spring Training.

I think there is a direct correlation between the weight loss of CC to his improved play during the 1st half of the year, but thats just me. Even if its a non-factor, it also just sends a bad message to your new employer, basically showing that your not motivated to impress your teammates and coaches through preparation and dedication.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP)—New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda will begin the season on the disabled list after tests showed inflammation in a shoulder tendon, but no structural damage.

The injury to Pineda helped the Yankees settle their rotation, at least to begin the season. C.C. Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia will begin as New York’s starters.

Pineda underwent treatment, including icing, at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa after an MRI exam on Saturday. The right-hander doesn’t know when he’ll resume playing catch.

“I’m feeling a little better,” Pineda said. “A little sore. I’m a little sad. I’ll be OK.”

Pineda experienced soreness in the back of his right shoulder during the Yankees’ 13-9 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. He allowed six runs and seven hits in 2 2-3 innings, and struggled with his fastball velocity again, averaging around 91 mph.

“I’m pitching this year,” Pineda said. “I’m coming back strong.”

Manager Joe Girardi said he was “very relieved because the rest of the MRI came out good.”

“You always worry about rotators and labrums and that kind of thing. The rest of his shoulder looked really good. He just had a little tendinitis,” he said.

Acquired from the Seattle Mariners in a winter trade for catcher Jesus Montero, Pineda struck out 18 and walked 10 in 19 spring innings. The All-Star had a 5.58 ERA.

“We’ll be conservative and make sure when he goes back out, he feels good,” Girardi said. “That would be the smart thing to do.”

"Michael Pineda began a throwing program Thursday, making 25 throws on flat ground while the Yankees worked out at Tropicana Field to prepare for Friday's opener. Pineda, who had been shut down since complaining of soreness in his right shoulder after last Friday's start, reported no problems after his session, though it was unclear what the next step would be. "No worries, no problem," GM Brian Cashman said of the session. "What he had was mild, at least by the MRI. It was hopefully nothing but a bump in the road. At the same time, you have to wait until he's back doing what he's supposed to be doing, so I give that with a little bit of a caveat."
