One thing that appears to be inevitable in the resigning process of SS Jose Reyes is his overall performance at the plate. Not only do the Mets want to see Reyes post a solid AVG and steal a lot of bases, but the club is reportedly telling Reyes that they want to see him improve his On Base Percentage before they discuss a Multi-Year Contract Extension. In 2010, Reyes' OBP was a .321%.
Reyes has shown higher OBP earlier in his career especially before his hamstring injury in 2009. Through 07-08 he accumulated OBPs of .354% & .358%.
According to MLBTR, in 2010 leadoff hitters averaged a .329 OBP.
Reyes has also said he prefers to wait until the season is over before discussing a contract extension with the Mets.
