Unable to delay the inevitable any longer, the Mets have released Luis Castillo. The team has confirmed the move via press release.

“This was [a] baseball decision,” GM Sandy Alderson said. “I met with Terry [Collins] and made a recommendation to Jeff [Wilpon] and Jeff approved on behalf of ownership.”

Luis Hernandez, Daniel Murphy and Brad Emaus remain in competition for the Mets' second base job. Earlier in the week it appeared that manager Terry Collins preferred Hernandez, but there's no clear-cut favorite.

Castillo hit .235/.337/.267 in 299 plate appearances last year and spent 47 days on the DL recovering from a left foot injury. The 35-year-old is entering the final season of the four-year, $25MM deal he signed after the 2007 season. Castillo impressed after the Mets acquired him in a mid-2007 trade with the Twins, hitting .296 and stealing 10 bases in a third of a season. That strong finish led to a $25MM guarantee from then-GM Omar Minaya.

Now a free agent, Castillo is available for the league minimum. The Mets will be responsible for his entire $6MM salary if he remains a free agent and they'll save just over $400K if he signs elsewhere.

He isn't really that bad, but everything seemed to go downhill for him after that missed pop up, might get picked up by another team in a backup role.

Lol what? He hit .300 with a .370 OBP the year before last and 20 steals.

Last year he dealt with injuries and he still got on base at a decent clip

Dude is awful defensively and has no range, he is a cancer to the team, all his hits barely get past the infield, and he's slow as fuck. Im so glad he is gone, now we can move on with a rookie and develop him.

you're fucking ignorant if you base a player's success on OBP and AVG. Dude is bad defensively because he's older and his range has deteriorated. You're basing him off of TWO years ago? Wow, that's retarded.

That's like me saying "Well AJ Burnett isn't that bad. He DID win 13 games two years ago. Hold the phones I can't keep my fuckin pants on!"
Seriously bro.

In that OH SO FABULOUS 2009 season you speak of, Castillo had an absolutely pathetic 12 doubles and 1 home run. He also grounded into 15 double plays that year. He is HORRIBLE.

*** Extra Base Hit Percentage:

2006: 4.8%
2007: 4.1%
2008: 3.1%
2009: 2.8%
2010: 2.0%'

Dude is getting worse at hitting the ball out of the infield as he gets older. He's washed up.

You're right, how could I be so foolish. I should have judged a singles hitter by home many extra-base hits he gets! Thank you for pointing that out for me!

Lmfao, get fucking real dude. A guy like Luis Castillo isn't going to get a lot of doubles or triples, he's a singles hitter. And I really can't believe you just discredited OBP, that is one of the most important stats in the game.

Not to mention I wasn't judging how he is now on that season, you said he was terrible his whole time as a Met when he clearly wasn't in the season I brought up. Your arrogance amuses me because you're completely off-base with your whole argument

So you're going to base a player off OBP and singles? That shows no versatility in his game. I don't give two shits if he's a "singles" hitter. The Mets DON'T need a singles hitter. They need a run producer at 2nd base and Castillo didn't fit the bill.

The point is he was never an extra base hitter but during his time with the Mets he hit EVEN LESS extra bases.

Sandy Alderson as the General Manager of this team needed to look at who was there and decide who gave his team the best chance to win. He looked at Castillo and saw him as a guy who has been riddled with injuries, has a deteriorating range in the field, and is unable to do anything other than hit singles and steal 2nd base from time to time. Maybe you need to get real.

I also did not discredit OBP. I simply stated you cannot base a player's overall performance and his ability to provide offense based on AVG and OBP. I like OBP, it's a nice stat, but it doesn't tell the whole picture.
He may be the right "singles hitter" for other teams but not for us.

PS. I'd love to see a direct quote from my previous post that I said he was terrible during his ENTIRE career with the Mets. Please. Find it because I don't see it.

I repeat, OBP is one of the most important stats in the game. Getting on base is the key to scoring runs.

And it wasn't you that said it, it was Mexi, my mistake. But you responded to my post at him with all this so I assumed you felt the same way

Sorry let me rephrase what I meant to say:

We need someone to DRIVE IN Runs.
