Yankees closer Mariano Rivera admitted on Tuesday that 2012 could be his final season.

"I don't know what will happen," said the future Hall of Famer, who turns 42 Tuesday and has one year and $15 million remaining on his contract. "I have one year left. I might call it over. I will know more in spring training."

Bothered for a month by a condition that has turned his voice into a raspy whisper, is awaiting a second opinion to see if he needs a surgical procedure done on his vocal chords.

"Every time I talk it gets worse and worse," Rivera said.

Rivera did not know what was causing the problem, but vocal chords sometimes sprout blisters or polyps that need to be removed. When it was mentioned that shaving of the vocal chords sounded like a simple procedure, Rivera smiled.

"When you are talking about surgery, there is nothing simple," Rivera said.

Teams around the league are rejoicing, lol. Great player, and even a greater person. I think this is his last season, he has nothing left to accomplish if you think about it. But he might still want to play for the love of the game.

Really hope that Joba or K-Rob is ready for the closer role.

It's going to be weird going into the 9th inning of a playoff game and not feeling 100% confident in your closer. I've never experienced that in my life.

Joba is going to be a good reliever. He was having a nice season before he had to have TJS.

Yeah but as closer? If Robertson has anywhere near the season he had last year I don't see how you don't give it to him.

Joba has the stuff to close. I don't see why he couldn't be our closer.

I agree that Robertson should get a shot at it first, but I was just throwing out names.

Boone Logan sucks.

Alright I feel you. I'd love to see Joba regain himself, he was one special player when he first came up.

Girardi not convinced Mo will retire.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi isn't buying into rumblings that closer Mariano Rivera will retire after next season.

Rivera will turn 42 on Nov. 29.

"No, not necessarily," Girardi said, when asked if he had gotten any sense this would be Rivera's final year.

"I think Mo takes it year by year and, depending on how he does, that will determine when it's time for him to retire."
