LeBron James never has taken part in the NBA's dunk contest. Now he might have a million reasons to try it.

Magic Johnson on Friday said he wants to see James take part in the annual contest so badly that he offered to give $1 million to James -- or anyone who can beat him.

"Please, LeBron, get in the dunk contest. I'm going to put up a million dollars," Johnson said on ESPN's Kia NBA Countdown. "A million dollars from Magic to LeBron. Please get in the dunk contest. I go every year. I want to see you out there. A million to the winner."

The NBA currently pays $100,000 to the winner and $50,000 to the runner-up. James always has declined to take part in the annual contest, but he has been throwing down trophy-worthy dunks lately in pregame warm-ups.

Jalen Rose called for more elite players to take part, as well.

"LeBron James, Blake Griffin both have to be in it," Rose said on the show, and Johnson agreed. "All-Star-caliber players helping build the league during All-Star weekend."
Absolutely agree. That night, here we were talking about how lame the dunk contest was. It's time for some of these stars to step up and save the damn dunk contest already.

Just do LeBron v. Blake. Give them each 4-6 dunks and let em duel it out.

Best dunk contest since Jordan and Nique.

I think the biggest advantage that LeBron has is that it seems like he knows exactly what he can do and can't do. We wouldn't see a missed dunk from him. And aren't those misses exactly what makes the DC so cringeworthy to watch? (aside from Kenny talking for 15 minutes between each dunk, but that wasn't the case this year)

They shouldn't allow more attempts on missed dunks in my opinion like it used to be. Gives players more reasons to be prepared and to get it on their first try.

id also like to see fan voting go away if we got stars. have real judges and tell them to vote on the dunks and forget about previous years and score the dunks for what they are.

But there were judges when Blake beat JaVale when Javale's dunks were much much better than Blake's. Someone needs to explain to me how that car dunk netted a 50, let alone something higher than a 45? That was fucking obnoxiously biased on the judges parts. Just horrible.

Because it was new and exciting. Maybe not the best dunk, but the showmanship is what made it. Just like Dwight busting out the Superman cape and just throwing the ball in was also a great dunk contest dunk, even though it was simple.

100% agree

Not to mention the dunk contest sucks because players have to do absolutely ridiculous dunks that have never been done to be considered good, not because stars refuse to do it.

It would be nice if all the best "star" dunkers could all just go in and do it ONCE.

It is a lost cause. Nothing can revive the dunk contest really. Unless we create a time machine for Vince Carter to go in to.

I disagree. I think getting real stars in that know their limitations would really help.

But of course that would probably be a one year stop gap.

Being a star player doesn't make you a better dunker than the scrubs who were in it, which is why it doesn't matter.

Point being, there are star players that are better dunkers than the scrubs who were in it.
