Indians are very high on Gomes despite him struggling at the plate this year. He'd still be playing almost every day in 2017 just not as a catcher. Oh well.

He's scared of a little competition.

Rosenthal now reporting the same thing. Lucroy asked Indians about being the starting catcher and Indians couldn't guarantee that which nixed the trade

He's a FA after 2017 and not being the starter at C would hurt his value

All he had to do was beat out a guy who was hitting .170 this year before going on the DL.

This is just a smokescreen by Lucroy's camp.

There's a snowball's chance in hell Gomes would be the opening day catcher of Lucroy.

If I was a team looking at Lucroy before all this I don't know if I would have the same interest. Asked to have his club option removed. Was scared to have an open competition. He says he wants to win but obviously doesn't have his priorities straight when it comes to that. I'm not saying he has any less value but it's definitely something I would take note of if I was a GM.

I wouldn't care. He has an option and the right to exercise the option. Don't give options if they bend you over later on.

Also players aren't team property. He's been underpaid for how long? It's time he uses his own leverage.

Being scared of competition is also a pile of BS.

Why would the Indians do that? There's a written contract and that dictates the terms.

Plus is that even allowed under the CBA?
yes it is, and its very common, it gives them incentive to agree to the trade, its usually a guarentee of options picked up or declined etc, sometimes they just rework the deal to give them more money etc.

I know reworking options is allowed.

Unsure about changing financial terms or why a team would even agree to.

id take note in it as i don't want to pay as much now viewing him as a rental....seeing that he wants more than 5M next year to be traded makes sense to me as a gm

teams agree so they don't void contracts, though sometimes they just do it to make the players happy (salvador Perez of the royals)

its worked as an extension of sorts

With the Indians being a budgeted team, I can't imagine that being viable.

which is why he just asked it to be removed, though they could afford it, it just isnt worth paying that much for 2 months of him and theyd need to sell him on the area before hed agree to an extension

That not guaranteeing him the catcher spot next year story is bullshit. The only thing that caused this is the option.

Lucroy is an idiot man. Does he think no matter what Gomes is going to be starting next year? Fuck no.

I agree - you don't give up that much talent and not guarantee a starting job the next year. That part of the story sounds like BS.

So instead of playing for 5 million on a team that is good with more exposure, he'll play for 5 on a bad team.
