The Detroit Lions have been focused on deciding whether they should franchise Cliff Avril and extending the contract of Calvin Johnson, but they took time over the weekend to meet with Jeff Backus' agent, according to Dave Birkett at the Detroit Free Press.
"We met at the combine and had a positive discussion," agent Pat Dye said. "We'll probably be reconvening here in the near future and we'll see where it goes."
Backus has anchored the left side of the Lions' offensive line for the past 11 years and the club intends to re-sign him for a 12th season. General manager Martin Mayhew said Backus is "progressing well" in his recovery from the torn chest muscle he played through last season and the torn biceps that was surgically repaired this offseason.
