Lionel Hollins Fired by Brooklyn Nets, Billy King Resigns as GM

Less than two years after giving him the job, the Brooklyn Nets fired head coach Lionel Hollins on Sunday and general manager Billy King also resigned from his position.

"Assistant Coach Tony Brown will serve as interim head coach. The GM position will remain open until a replacement is named," the Nets announced, per John Schuhmann of NBA.com.

“After careful consideration, I’ve concluded that it’s time for a fresh start and a new vision for the direction of the team," owner Mikhail Prokhorov, according to Schuhmann

Hollins exits having posted a 38-44 record in 2014 and a 10-27 record in 2015. Brooklyn fell to the top-seeded Atlanta Hawks in six games in the first round of the 2015 NBA playoffs.

Few can label his tenure a failure since expectations for the team weren't exactly high heading into the year. Few teams of late more so than the Nets have had more of an eye toward the present while almost completely ignoring the future.

Going back, there was the Deron Williams trade, which saw Derrick Favors and two first-round picks go to the Utah Jazz. Even more quizzically, the Nets dealt their 2012 first-rounder—which turned into Damian Lillard—to the Portland Trail Blazers for Gerald Wallace.
All of this helps to explain why Brooklyn is where it is and why Hollins might have been doomed to fail from the start.

The Nets appear destined for a painful prolonged rebuild, which might help to explain why Hollins is on the way out. Hollins is a very good coach, but his Memphis Grizzlies teams seemed to have a ceiling to their playoff aspirations.

In a way, Hollins is the coach you hire before hiring the guy you really think can turn your team into a title contender.
Maybe the Nets' next coach can help usher in the new era that is so necessary in Brooklyn.

More like Lionel Hollins has been freed from NBA hell.

I remember reading lat week that Prokhorov wants to bring in someone from Moscow to be the GM.

So I'm not surprised the already got Billy King out of the way.

But, at the same time, think of it as a 3 year/120 million dollar deal, because that's about as long as he'd last.

Not all that money would be guaranteed haha. Probably closer to $80M/3 on that deal

But really though. Phil Jackson makes $12-15M annually for doing almost nothing for the Knicks. I can't see why Calipari couldn't get $12M+ from the owner that throws around money like he does
