Knicks pick up 14.2M option on Billups

The New York Knicks have picked up the $14.2 million option on point guard Chauncey Billups, ensuring that he will be with the team for the 2011-12 season, a league source told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan on Wednesday.

The Knicks will have no flexibility to improve. They've got 55,297,705 wrapped up in just four players. The Knicks were put in a tough spot with the deal though, you pick up Billups option and you don't have much cap left, and if you don't your team isn't nearly as good.

The Knicks make another dumb move though, they could of easily got him for less.

The Knicks made the right move here, and I think Billups will have a very nice season for them next year after acclimating to the game-play style in New York. He's one of the best court generals in the NBA, so I think this was the right move.

Hmmm... on one hand I understand its a lot of money and I didnt want to spend that much on Billups. But on the other hand its only a 1 year contract, we are just picking up his option. The worst that can happen is that he doesnt play well enough this upcoming year and we dont resign him. That is also to say if we released him, would a better PG have been signed? Idk what Free Agency is going to look like this upcoming year.

short-term, eh, i don't like it. Less financial flexibility. Long-term, might actually benefit us. I remember when we dealt for Melo & Chancey people were mentioning that if we were to (and I don't envision this happening anyhow) trade next year at the deadline for Chris Paul, having a healthy and productive Chauncey would be very helpful.

But like I said, I doubt it happens. Not nearly enough pieces on the team to pull that off, unless we're lucky, and I mean REALLY lucky.

I honestly think the new CBA will force stars to stay put.

doesn't matter, really. If he wants to be a Free Agent he can be a Free Agent. Plenty of teams will do everything they can to move contracts to be able to afford him.

If the Knicks were to trade for him next year -- like I said I doubt it happens, we have nothing to offer except for like even more draft picks & Shawne Williams, lol -- they could resign him and be A-Ok.

I hate the negativity about the players. It's a business. Players should be able to have freedom to go to a new team for a better chance to win. Otherwise they'd sign career-long contracts after being drafted.

Declined the option and signed him to a smaller contract so you can afford to add someone via FAcy.
Billups is a loyal guy, he would of taken a paycut. Not like any other team in the league would offer anything near that.

I'm split on the decision. There are some solid PGs to draft, but the Knicks would have had to find a way to trade up in the draft to get a guy like Kemba Walker. But I think they have a bigger need to draft a Center than a PG. Just all depends on who's still available.

I'm just commenting on what the Hornets believe could happen. So many think Chris hates New Orleans for some reason, but he LOVES New Orleans. He just wants to know the organization is committed to winning.
