Kings to Reportedly Offer DeMarcus Cousins a $200-Million Deal

The Sacramento Kings reportedly plan to make DeMarcus Cousins a $200 million man next summer.

The 26-year-old All-Star center has this season and next remaining on his current deal.
Boogie recently said he plans to remain in Sac-Town for the remainder of his career.
Per ESPN:
The Kings, as you surely know by now, are openly desperate to bring their 10-season playoff drought to a halt. Those who know Sacramento best continue to say that, as long as the West’s No. 8 seed remains within the Kings’ sights, they’ll be increasingly reluctant to part with their All-Star ‎center.

But sources also say that the Kings, at season’s end, want to pitch Cousins on a long-term partnership in the summertime, knowing he’s going to be eligible in July for a Designated Player Extension that ‎could make him one of a handful of $200 million players league wide.

The latest signals suggest it would take a monster offer to get the Kings to tweak those plans.

What can a team that doesn't own his bird rights offer him? There's nothing stopping him from demanding a trade after he gets his money (well he'd have to wait until December, but that's it unless the new CBA changed this rule).

Not a whole freaking lot.

I just ran the numbers, using Spotrac's projected $102,000,000 cap, multiplying it by the ~0.941 BRI ratio and then multiplying that by the 30% that he would receive, and the first year number comes to $28,821,725. Obviously Cousins isn't a UFA until 2018, not 2017, but I can't imagine 2018 being that much more than 2017 to sway these numbers.

So if Cousins were to sign in 2018 a max with lets say the 76ers (again, because we don't know 2018's data we'll use the $28m figure from above), he can receive a four year deal with a 4.5% annual increase. The overall contract would be $123,068,762 over four years, starting in 2018.

Now, if Cousins were to go with the Kings' Designated Player Exception, he's actually allowed a sixth year on his extension. These numbers aren't affected by the 2018 cap, but would take place in 2018 after his 2017 ~$18m expires. He also receives a 7.5% increase instead of other teams' 4.5%. The overall contract would be $205,354,740 over six years, starting in 2018.

Its impossible for another team to come close to outbidding for Cousins. Either he'll take $80m less (doubtful), stay a member of the Kings, or do exactly like you alluded to and request for a trade and be moved by December 2017 when he's eligible to be moved.

The new CBA makes it really difficult financially for star players to leave their current teams, if this CBA had been in place for the past few years I would bet KD would still be in OKC
