Goodell: $1 salary if work stoppage

NEW YORK (AP)—NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will cut his salary to $1 if there is a work stoppage after the collective bargaining agreement expires in March.

Goodell, who makes about $10 million a year including bonuses, said in a memo to his staff Wednesday that chief negotiator Jeff Pash will do the same. Pash makes nearly $5 million a year.

Goodell also has asked the league’s compensation committee to delay any bonus payments to him until after a deal is reached with the NFL Players Association.

“Let me emphasize that we are fully committed to doing everything possible to reach a new collective bargaining agreement without any disruption to our business,” Goodell said. “The entire senior leadership team stands with me in its commitment to resolving the CBA issues with the player’s union.

“While several other executives have also volunteered to make additional reductions to their compensation, I have asked them not to take that step at this time as we continue our negotiating efforts.”

NFL owners opted out of the agreement in 2008.

Union chief DeMaurice Smith has predicted the owners will lock out the players after the March 4 expiration of the contract with the league. Smith tweeted in reaction to Goodell’s pledge: “NFL executives reducing salaries in the event of a lockout? If we have a deal by Super Bowl, I’ll go down to 68 cents.”

NFLPA communications director Carl Francis was not impressed by Goodell’s memo.

“I have been around long enough to know that this decision is irrelevant to the process,” Francis said. “He should also guarantee there won’t be a lockout.”

Goodell gets a bad rap from a lot of fans b/c he's come down hard on a lot of players acting like they're still chillin on MLK Jr. Blvd...and his regime is finally being proactive about serious player injury prevention...but it's shit like this as to why I love the guy. I don't agree with everything decision Goodell makes but I think he's the face of the 21st century NFL and people don't like it. I am loving this, "if they don't paid, neither will I" attitude and this is what leading from the front is all about.

This last sentence is true...but I'd become greedy as a motherfucker, in no time at all. I'd have the same mentality of making as much money as I could, as fast as I could...b/c too many hits or worse, a single collision or a single injury...and it's game-over forever.

I really like Goddell. He wants to get a new deal done arguably badder than anyone else on earth. But what we have to keep in mind is it takes 2 to tango. He can't make a deal happen all on his own.

I am really surprised a salary system closer to the NBA's structure didn't happen a few CBA negotiations ago. You've got these retired veterans all complaining about the lack of benefits, long broke, and suffering long-term disability...so why wasn't the decision made a long time ago to ensure the longer players play, the more their salaries will be guaranteed and protected?

Outrageous rookie salaries are what piss me off the most about the past 15 years of the NFL's CBA & I am a proponent of the shorter, much cheaper rookie contracts...thus Ryan Leafs and JaMarcus Russell's of the world don't get shit. I also think the massive signing bonuses need to go away and salaries guaranteed.

I concur. I said the same thing during the NBA lockout back in the 1998-99 season.

I just want football next year, hopefully they can agree on something and make it happen. The NFL can't afford a lockout, the sport is at a high level right now.
