EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Derrick Ward, the New York Giants' leading rusher, suffered a broken leg Sunday against the Chicago Bears and will be out indefinitely.

Ward fractured his left fibula, the thinner of the two bones extending from the knee to the ankle, in the fourth quarter of New York's 21-16 come-from-behind victory. He rushed 24 times for a career-high 154 yards.

"At this point in time it doesn't appear to be surgical, but he will be out," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday. When asked if he thought that meant for the rest of the season, Coughlin said, "That's the way it appears."

Ward, who is in his fourth year, leads the Giants in rushing with 602 yards despite missing the previous four games with ankle and groin injuries.

"It's tough to deal with," Ward said Sunday. "I'll bounce back from this like I bounced back from all the other ones."

Brandon Jacobs, the opening day starter who has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, could replace Ward on Sunday at Philadelphia.

Dang Roy Williams out for the year, Derrick Ward (broken leg), a Texans offensive linemen (broken leg) and Donovan McNabb.....tough sport.
Dang this is brutal, but at least Reuben Droughns will get more carries now (he's on my fantasy team).

Well the Giants have had so many injury scares, but how many of them end up bad? basically very few of them.

I don't think he'll be out for the rest of the season.

Who cares? Wasn't Brandon Jacobs supposed to be "the guy"? Oh wait...he can't stay healthy or hold onto the ball for that matter.

Doesn't matter, the Giants cannot play consistent enough week to week & they will drop out of that Wild Card spot one way or the other.

I doubt it. They've already matched their win total from last year.

I'm shocked he broke his leg because he was walking off the field so I assumed he just brused something.

I have to disagree, as long as we play when it counts (i.e. last two drives in 4th qtr. against the Bears) we will hold on to that spot. We have a good chance of going 3-1 in our last few games we have Philly, Buffalo, New England, and some other team.

I dont think you will beat New England, Philly isn't going to be an "easy win" and that "other team" happens to be Washington...a team that gave you a run for your money earlier this season. You have no running game w/just Droughns in the backfield, your Passing game is ranked 18th in the league, and Eli has been wretched in 7 of the last 8 quarters of football he has played in.

I wouldn't sound too confident Giants' fans.

You know what is the thing however, we played two good defenses. Defenses win championships and our defense is still adjusting to loss of quickly progressing Mathias Kiwanuka. His endzone interception vs. the bears was a simple mistake many QB's would make. He was under pressure, avoided the sack, and tried to get the ball to his tall receiver before defender has time to beat him in vertical game, he just was matched against good defender.
Running game is good, and Wards injury is devastating because he had a 154 yard rush game against a very good defense with very good linebackers.
Whether or not he played good for 3 quarters, his last two drives got the job done. As Ditak said just a second ago, It's not how you start the race, it's how youfinish the race and Eli made up for his mistakes.
Possibly saved season for G-Men, and also gave the team an outstanding confidence boost.

No we wont beat NE, but the rest of our games are wins, why?

Philly- we already beat them WITH McNabb, their offensive line is garbage compared to our D-Line so no matter who starts, whether its Feeley or McNabb they have to actually get the ball off first.

Washington- yes we "squeaked" by them earlier BUT up until the secon half of that game our defense was horrible, we had given up 45 to the Cowboys and 30 something against the Packers in the week before, the 2nd half of that game is where they actually "woke-up" so if they cant beat us w/ only one good half of defense, what will they do with 2?

I think you should worry about Minny making the run to the wildcard, b/c right now we are all but in...
