Adam Dunn and the Detroit Tigers could be close to striking a deal, one that would make Dunn wealthy again. Dunn and the Tigers have been in heavy negotiations that could possibly lead to him becoming their designated hitter for the next few years.

According to MLive.com, the first major priority for the Tigers was signing a middle reliever, and they accomplished that by signing Joaquin Benoit. Then the team apparently turned their attention to Dunn, and has been working on a deal that will reportedly extend for four years. That is great news for Tigers fans, and would give them an extremely potent middle-of-the-lineup, with Miguel Cabrera hitting in front of him.

According to ESPN, the going rate for Dunn, or at least the minimum bid for his services, is at about $40 million over three years. That would put a deal with the Tigers at around $50 to $55 million for the four years, and would net the slugger a very nice contract to come over to the American League. It might be a bit surprising that the Tigers have been so aggressive with going after Dunn, but he would be the perfect complement to that lineup if they are successful in wooing him.
<3 Guy pretty much all Detroit has wanted for years.

2:04pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweets that a source says talk about Dunn going to the Tigers is "way too premature." Detroit likes the first baseman/outfielder/DH, but they're not that far along in talks.

12:42pm: Adam Dunn is moving closer to a deal, maybe with the Tigers, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. SI's Jon Heyman tweets that Dunn and the Tigers are in serious talks, but big man is not close to an agreement with any team. The powerful left-handed slugger is known to be among Detroit's targets. He could fit as their regular left fielder, perhaps getting the occasional start at DH or first base. The Tigers have been aggressive so far this offseason, and to secure Dunn this early they'd probably have to guarantee four years.
On MLBTR November 17th.
