Veteran lefty Dontrelle Willis, who's been pitching for Triple-A Norfolk (Orioles) in an attempt to work his way back to the majors, has retired, the team announced.

The 30-year-old Willis spent parts of nine seasons with the Marlins, Tigers, Diamondbacks and Reds. Over that span, he compiled a major-league record of 72-69 with an ERA of 4.17.

Originally an eighth-round choice of the Cubs, Willis was dealt as a minor-leaguer to the Marlins in 2002.

As a rookie, Willis was a key member of the Marlins' team that won the 2003 World Series. In that World Series, Willis logged 3.2 scoreless innings of relief against the Yankees. Also a skilled hitter by pitcher standards (career batting line of .244/.287/.378), Willis went 3 for 3 with a triple against the Giants in Game 4 of the 2003 NLDS.

Willis was at his best in 2005, when he posted a 2.63 ERA across 236.1 innings and led the majors with seven complete games and five shutouts.
One of my favorite players in the league :( Good Luck with the rest of your life dontrelle.

Still puzzles me to this day as to why the Tigers gave him 3 years/30 mill right after trading for him, or even the reason for trading for him in the first place.

Trading for him made sense. The extension certainly didn't.

Because he was rated a 97 overall in MVP Baseball 2005, duh.

He regressed a lot in 2006 after his career year, and then had a horrendous season in 2007, showing that 2005 was a pretty much a fluke.

Was still worth the risk. Plus we picked up Miguel Cabrera in the deal. lol.
And we didn't trade anybody who is remotely decent right now, or even in the league, other than Cameron Maybin (who isn't very good himself).
Trading for him was worth a shot. However the extension was stupid as all hell.

However, I don't get why he at least just didn't try to convert to a hitter.

He was one of my favorites. I loved imitating his pitching motion.

It sucks what happened to him. He hasn't really been the same since leaving Florida.

Finally, this dude shouldve retired like 3 years ago. But you gotta do what you gotta do to get a paycheck. Only had 1 great season and that was it.
