Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal(notes) has been out of action since April 11 with a broken left thumb, but the team should expect him back fairly soon as he will begin a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday, according to MLB.com.
He should only need about 25-30 at-bats before being ready to return to the majors, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said, the site reports. However, the 33-year-old Furcal's thumb still feels tender when he swings the bat right-handed.
"I don't think it will be another two weeks. We're talking about days," Mattingly said, according to the site. "He feels better every day. He's been hitting right-handed soft toss. He's been out a while and I'd like him to be sharp when he gets back. The biggest thing is for him to be comfortable."
