The Dodgers have designated outfielder Carl Crawford for assignment and recalled catcher/infielder Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his roster spot, per a team announcement.

Designating Crawford could bring about a significant financial hit for the Dodgers, who will likely have to pay the remaining $35MM on his contract, as Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times notes (on Twitter). Crawford, who’s signed through next season, “got caught in the numbers game,” Dodgers vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes told MLB Network Radio (Twitter link). The Dodgers do have a slew of non-Crawford outfield options in Joc Pederson, Trayce Thompson, Scott Van Slyke, Howie Kendrick and Enrique Hernandez, but this is nonetheless quite a fall from grace for such a high-profile player.

Where should Crawford go from here?

I'd look at the Angels. They can get Crawford on the cheap, they aren't crazy about their OF, and are desperate for any sort of pop in the bottom half of the lineup.

such a huge amount of money for a guy to just simply go away.

Called this yesterday in the dead money thread. Glad they finally did it. Hes useless
Cant run anymore. Cant hit lefties or righties
On par with juan pierre with worst arm ive ever seen

He also seemed so meh. Like he was waiting for this too.

Hes a cool guy. I hope he does well on his new team. Just glad we arent wasting a roster spot anymore
