First baseman Carlos Pena may have hit below the Mendoza Line last year for the Tampa Bay Rays with a .196 average, but when he got a hit, he made it count: Pena hammered out 28 homers and knocked in 84 runs while scoring 64 himself.
Now the 1998 first-round pick is a free agent and FOXSports is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are interested in the 32-year-old. In 2009, Pena batted .227 with 39 homers and 100 RBIs. He's hit 144 homers in the last four years
The Northsiders would apparently like to add an "experienced left-handed power hitter," the site notes.

This could potentially take a major hit on Tampa's power, which could end up being a difficult offseason for them.

Pena for one year wouldn't be a horrible idea for the Cubs. If he can just raise his average to like .220 and still draw the amount of walks he gets, then we'd be looking at a .220/.350/.450? line, which isn't that bad. He could finally fit as the left handed power bat the Cubs have been looking for over the past few seasons.

It was figured he was another guy that wasn't going to be staying in Tampa. I don't know how he would do with the cubs, going from AL to NL, and I know people don't believe that effects a player, but it does, imo. Aubrey Huff did absolutely nothing with the Tigers, then he goes to the Giants, when no one else wanted him and was one of their best players. Same story with Renteria. Pena still has pop left in his bat.

Pena plays terrific defense as well which will go far towards his overall value.

We're apparently also after Brandon Webb... An off-season of Pena, Webb, and bringing back Kerry Wood would be perfect for this team.

Haha I miss Carlos. Was my favorite player after we got rid of Higginson.
