The Charlotte Bobcats are in the process of changing their name back to "Hornets," a source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com's Will Brinson, including arranging digital assets that would allow a return to their original nickname.

There is no timetable for the switch though NBA commissioner to be Adam Silver told Bobcats season ticket holders in April that such a change would take at least 18 months to implement. Moreover, the change is not unexpected and would likely be popular with the North Carolina fan base.

Silver told season ticket holders re-acquiring the name "Hornets" would not be an issue, stating that the NBA and not the Pelicans owned the moniker. Acquiring and rearranging the necessary digital assets would be a major part of any change. Hornets.com and CharlotteHornets.com are owned by NBA Media Ventures, LLC and currently redirect to NBA.com/Pelicans.

Merchandise sales will skyrocket if  Jordan is wise enough to direct the vintage colors, uniforms, and logo be brought back.  It would also be cool to see Zo, LJ, and Mugsy brought back for the official announcement, when it happens.

This is the breath of fresh air we need here in Charlotte..

Idk if MJ or even the NBA knows how much of a difference this will make here, ticket sales will skyrocket, as will apparel.

I know Ill start going to more games, not just when the Knicks come to town.

According to an AP report, the Bobcats are holding a press conference tomorrow, where MJ will announce the change & layout the timeline.

Was also reading about how much it's going to cost organization to make such a change.  Everything from the floor, uniforms...down to the team's letterhead will need to be changed.  No doubt will eventually pay off but in the meantime, quite the purchase for MJ's bball club.

Jordan: Bobcats changing name to Hornets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Jordan wants to "bring the buzz back" to Charlotte.

The Bobcats owner said at a press conference Tuesday evening he's changing his team's name to the Charlotte Hornets beginning in 2014-15.

Jordan said he submitted an application to the NBA board of governors earlier Tuesday informing them of his decision and is optimistic the board will approve the name change when they convene in July.

"Let's bring the buzz back, and bring that energy back on the basketball court and make this city proud again," Jordan said.

Charlotte will remain the Bobcats next season, but if all goes as planned Jordan anticipates his team will become the Hornets the following season.

Jordan said his organization is giving the fans what they want.

"We spoke to our season ticket holders and fans, and overwhelmingly you guys wanted the Hornets name back," Jordan said. "And we went out and brought the name back."

yeah they're already selling tickets to 2014's opener and giving away the Jordan jacket

sorry Nola, Hornets belong in Charlotte. just their teasing the change looks so promising. purple/carolina blue looks great
hopefully they roll with some purple jerseys. no one in the East wears purple and only the Lakers/Kings do since I'm pretty sure the Suns are cutting back on the purple
