QUEBEC CITY -- Quebec's prosecutor says Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara won't face criminal charges for his hit on Montreal Canadiens' forward Max Pacioretty last spring.

Pacioretty broke a vertebra and was out for the season after being shoved into a stanchion by Boston's 6-foot-9 defenseman in March.

The provincial prosecutors' office said in a statement Thursday that it does not believe a court would find Chara guilty of a crime and it has closed the case.

Bruins president Cam Neely issued a statement Thursday night saying the team also considered the matter closed and would have no further comment.

Chara's said it was "good news" after the Bruins 2-1 win over Columbus on Thursday night, but did not elaborate.

Chara received a game misconduct but was not suspended. The ensuing uproar in Montreal prompted the police investigation.

Montreal police interviewed various witnesses and concluded their investigation in August after meeting with Chara.

Pacioretty was critical of the NHL's handling of the incident, but had called police involvement unnecessary. He has returned to play this season.

Especially when Pacioretty said there was no reason for the Police to get involved.

Yeah, we should all move on from this. Pacioretty has, and he's playing the best hockey of his young career this season.

If Pacioretty wasn't able to play hockey again, or if this had been in the nature of Bertuzzi on Steve Moore years ago, maybe this case would have some validity.

lol what are you talking about? He didn't try to hit him and he didn't even know he was there? Did you even see the hit? Obviously he didn't mean to hurt him so badly but he did throw a hit on him.

he didnt even mean to hit him haha, he kind of gives him a shove, then looks ahead then pacioretty just goes into the turnbuckle, non of them saw the turnbuckle.

He just kind of rides him along the boards, gives him a shove into the turnbuckle, which was accidental

i meant he didnt see that the turnbuckle was coming up, and chara was just finishing his check, and barely for that matter, all he did was give him a little shove accidently into the turnbuckle, but it wasnt chara's fault at all, complete accident, you can tell just by how chara, didnt even notice pacioretty was down until the whistle blew
