Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says reliever Pedro Feliciano was overused by the Mets.

Feliciano, who signed with Cashman's team this past winter, is on the disabled list with a left rotator cuff strain.

The left-hander led the majors in appearances the past three seasons, and in 2010, he became just the fifth pitcher in MLB history to make 90 or more appearances.

"He was abused," Cashman said. "It's a thin market when you're looking for lefties, and he's one of the better ones out there. But you don't typically go after a guy who's been used like that.

"The use pattern was abusive."

Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said Feliciano's setting franchise records for appearances three straight years (86, 88 and 92 games) was done willingly by the southpaw.

Warthen said about the left-hander's heavy workload: "[The Yankees] didn't know that when they signed him? ... He volunteered for the baseball every day. He was asked whether he was able to pitch. He said 'yes' every day -- every day -- and wanted to pitch more than we even pitched him."

"I feel badly that [Cashman] feels that way," Warthen added. "That was part of the reason we decided to not re-sign [Feliciano] -- because we knew we had used him 270-some times in the last three years."

Being a Met was abusive enough :p

But yeah, I agree, he was definitely overused, leading the majors in appearances three years in a row is ridiculous.

Yeah, but that's something that should've been evaluated before Cashman signed him. Seems like a cop out to me - do your research before you sign him.

He's well aware that he was used a lot, I don't think he's using this as an excuse or a cop out for the signing, I think he was just saying it.

Feliciano: Mets Didn't 'Overuse' Me, But Hurt Feelings

Yankees reliever Pedro Feliciano doesn't agree with the assessment that the Mets, his former team, overused him, but he was hurt by his former coach's comments.

Brian Cashman, who signed the left-hander to a two-year deal this winter, said over the weekend that the Mets "overused" Feliciano, who appeared in 266 games over the last three seasons.

"I think at some points they just left me there with no reason," Feliciano said. "But I want to pitch. I want to be in there. That's what I like to do. And I think I was fine always. I never felt sore or anything. I always felt good.'"

The reliever says Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen hurt his feelings by saying concern over his number of appearances was the reason the Mets did not re-sign him after the 2010 season.

"I feel hurt a little by that," Feliciano said. "I didn't sign with them because they offered me one year. But me and my agent, we wanted a multiyear. Two or more years and they just gave me one. That's why I'm not a Met right now."

Feliciano pitched four innings in spring training before being shut down on March 22.

"They said they didn't sign me because [they knew] I'm going to blow up this year," Feliciano said. "That hurts because I like Dan. But I will come out from this injury and I will be telling him there is still a lot of Feliciano to go."

Lmao, oh Pedro.... Now people are bitching that he was overused but when he was on the Mets it was all good right? BS...

Dan Warthen is telling the truth, that we felt he was used a lot and that could be lead to a decline in his pitching. And then bam an injury this season. And now Feliciano is saying he is going to strike out Ike Davis, where did that come from? lol

While I understand the Mets had him appear way too many times, he also didn't pitch as many innings as appearances. yet if you look in the past, I'm sure a few Yankees relievers were "abused".

Just from quick memory, I'll take a look at Scott Proctor:

2006 - 83 Games - 102.1 Innings
2007 - 52 Games with Yankees - 54.1 innings
2007 - 31 Games with Dodgers - 32.0 innings

Since that 07 season:

3 Seasons - 76.1 Innings - 78 Games - Ever sine then he's been on DL's and missed significant time due to elbow pain and ligament fraying which led to Tommy John surgery.

Cashman basically left he door wide open for the Mets and shockingly enough they took the high road.
