HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Two championship rings and near universal acclaim as the most skilled big man in basketball still haven’t silenced the most vocal faction of critics of Lakers All-Star power forward Pau Gasol.
The “soft” label is still being tossed around liberally by Gasol’s NBA peers, and that includes both Amar’e Stoudemire and Kendrick Perkins, players that Gasol’s Lakers vanquished on their way to the their second straight title last season.
Stoudemire brought it up again at a recent public appearance (caught on YouTube above) at Foot Locker. And while he deserves credit for qualifying his slight and insisting that Gasol is a “good player,” enough is just about enough with this soft stuff.
Perkins lit up Gasol and Lakers coach Phil Jackson in an ESPN The Magazine interview last month:
“I don’t like Pau Gasol or Phil Jackson. Phil is arrogant. Pau is soft. Kobe [Bryant] tries to bring out his toughness, but he’s still soft.”
Thankfully, Jackson and Gasol’s teammates rushed to his defense, more from ESPNLosAngeles.com:
Lakers forwards Odom and Ron Artest were informed of the latest talk against Gasol as they changed in the locker room before Tuesday’s game against Utah.
“Pau got moves. He don’t have to be hard. That’s why he got us,” said a shirtless Artest as he flexed his chest and arm muscles.
“How are you soft and average 10 rebounds?” chimed in Odom.
Gasol is sixth in the league in rebounds per game this season, averaging 10.2 boards to go with his 18.9 points per game scoring average.
Artest didn’t let the moment pass without throwing a zinger back at Stoudemire.
“Amar’e posed on the front of [a magazine] butt naked!” Artest said. “OK, is that tough?”
An unclothed Stoudemire appeared in the ESPN the Magazine’s annual “Body Issue” in October.
Jackson, however, offered up the best solution.
“Win another championship,” Jackson told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “Just go out and do it again. That keeps people quiet really quick.”

IMO Amare should just stay quiet.

Gasol can be as soft as he wants, but in the end of the day he's still the best big in the league

I don't know what Artest is talking about. The girls on Playboy covers are pretty tough.

Amare' does tend to say things when he doesn't need to. Especially in this case, because he's being a hypocrite. Soft knows soft I guess.

Soft players should not be allowed to call other soft players soft.

He's not even the best "big" on his own team.

Don't you ever get tired of failing miserably on this website with stupid comments like this?

Amare is a better player than Pau, and Pau is soft. But Pau is also a two-time champion so I don't think Amare has much room to talk.

lol Amare. dumbass

like some of you said, amare is soft too. he has no room to talk. his team sucks and the lakers are 2 time champs. what the hell is he talking trash for?

odom is right
“How are you soft and average 10 rebounds?” chimed in Odom.
Gasol is sixth in the league in rebounds per game this season, averaging 10.2 boards to go with his 18.9 points per game scoring average.
here's the actual quote from amare
"He's still soft," Stoudemire said with a grin and a shrug. "But, he's a good player, you know what I mean? But he also has help down there. He has help down there in Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum, those 7-footers down there. So he's got some supporting cast."
uh amare, pau has been the main big the past 3 finals trips. bynum didnt play in 08, bynum barely played in 09 and played great defense on dwight, and last year pau kicked boston's ass with bynum playing on 1 damn knee. and lets not act like lamar odom is charles oakley

im not saying pau isnt soft (because he is soft), but he steps up in the playoffs and amare seriously has no room to talk. that soft ass pau beat amare in the playoffs last year, no?

yeah he had the better numbers
25/6 for amare
20/7 for pau

but for being soft, pau still got 20 a game that series on amare

again, not saying pau isnt soft, but he does step up and amare has absolutely no room to talk

Amar'e really should've left this one alone, but it's not like he tried to say Pau's softness makes him garbage. he gave him props afterwards but this was still something better left un-said.
