Texans acquired WR Derrick Mason from the Jets in exchange for a conditional draft choice.
The writing was on the wall for Mason, who played just five snaps in Sunday's loss to the Patriots after criticizing the Jets' offense last week. Of course, those words probably wouldn't have mattered if he had done anything on the field. Mason hasn't, making 13 catches for 115 yards in five games. In Houston, he'll provide veteran insurance for a club expected to be without Andre Johnson for at least the next two weeks. Although Mason will be in a passing offense worlds ahead of New York's, it's hard to believe he'll be in for a meaningful uptick in production. 37 1/2 years old, Mason lost his ability to separate at about the halfway point last season. The receiver-thin Ravens wouldn't have cut him if he had anything left.
