PENGUINS ACQUIRE RIGHTS TO HAMHUIS FROM FLYERS

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers have dealt the rights to free agent defenseman Dan Hamhuis to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for the Pens' third-round pick in the 2011 draft.

The deal was announced on the Flyers' twitter page on Friday, minutes after the completion of the first round of the 2010 draft in Los Angeles.

Hamhuis, an unrestricted free agent, was originally dealt from Nashville to Philadelphia on June 19 along with a conditional draft pick for defenseman Ryan Parent.

However, the Flyers could not come to terms with the 27-year-old who posted five goals and 24 points in 78 games for the Preds, before the July 1 free- agent signing deadline.

Pittsburgh will sink their remaining cap into Hammy and Gonchar will hit the open market.

I think the Pens are just too far apart with Gonchar negotiations and the FA market outside of Gonchar is pretty slim. This is the best "plan B" for the Penguins as they're just going to have to rely on Letang more now than ever.

Indeed he does. Gonchar is probably asking for too much that's why he's iffy on getting him back. Let young guys like letang and Goli to lead the blue line and get a decent veteran defenseman to help them. Gonchar is getting old and hasn't been all that healthy anyways.

The dollar amount may be close but you're talking about a whole year that differs. They may not be Worlds apart but the Pens are apparently far enough apart to seek out another option & see Gonchar out of Pitt.

They don't want that 5M+ on their cap hit for 3 more years since it counts no matter what he does. He'd be 39 and out of it by that time when that money could be used to re-sign a core player.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero plans to speak Monday with defenseman Dan Hamhuis about his possible long-term fit with the club.

Hamhuis, 27, can become a free agent at noon on Thursday. The Penguins acquired his rights from Philadelphia for a 2011 third-round pick last Friday at the NHL Entry Draft.

Shero has had preliminary talks with Hamhuis' agent, Wade Arnott. Those two expect to talk again Monday.

The Penguins would like to sign Hamhuis and defenseman Sergei Gonchar before Thursday. Gonchar, 36, also is slated for free agency.

Gonchar's agent JP Barry said today there was no update on negotiations with Shero. The Penguins and Gonchar are haggling over terms; he is seeking a three-year deal, and they would prefer two years.

Internet reports that Gonchar has been given a hard deadline of Monday to sign are not accurate.

The Penguins are about $10 million under the projected $59.4 million salary cap for next season, and signing both defensemen would take up the majority of that space.

I read an article on Shero's plan too. He's gonna have a 1 on 1 with Gonchar today because they're still going back and forth with offers. He made it known they want Gonchar back and they want to sign Hamhuis also, if not they're going for 2 key defensemen anyways.

Who wouldn't? Lol. He's a BC boy, and he's was Canucks fan growing up. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs with the ducks though.
