Sharks sign couture to 2-year extension

Logan Couture and the San Jose Sharks have agreed to a two-year contract extension reportedly worth $5.75 million.

Couture was set to become a restricted free agent after the coming season.

The 22-year-old forward was a finalist for the Calder Trophy last season, posting 32 goals and 24 assists. In the playoffs, Couture had 7 goals and 7 assists in 18 games.

"Logan is an excellent teammate and he proved it by committing to the team-first philosophy that we have instilled here," San Jose general manager Doug Wilson said on the team's website. "Last season, as a rookie, he was a catalyst for our hockey club as one of our most consistent players. Over the last two postseasons, he has been one of our most reliable players. We're excited to see him build upon his early success and continue his growth over the next three seasons."

The London, Ontario, native was originally selected by San Jose in the first round (9th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He has 37 goals and 65 points in 104 career regular-season NHL games.

Good deal for both sides. If Couture continues his success, he'll receive a great fat pay-check by the end of that contract.

Doug Wilson has been on a mission in the off-season. He has bolstered our defense that hasn't been good in a long time (traded for Burns, signed Vandermeer and Colin White), which is easily an upgrade over losing Kent Huskins and Niclas Wallin. He also upgraded our penalty kill by signing Handzus and did a fantastic job re-signing Couture and Burns after dumping Heatley's contract, which was indeed the smart thing to do since Heater wasn't working out here.

Couture had an amazing rookie season and will continue to become a better 3 zone player than he is today. Good cap hit, good amount of years, very excited about Couture being a Shark for the next 3 years!
