B.J. Upton survived the trade deadline in a Rays’ uniform, but there’s still a chance he could have a new home before the end of the season.

According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, Upton was claimed off revocable waivers by an unknown team.

Topkin suspects the mystery team could be the Nationals, who have expressed interest in the past, though Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post wrote earlier this week that “there’s healthy debate within the Nationals about the merits of making Upton their answer in center field.”

The Rays have until Monday to work out a trade with the claiming team, but Topkin believes a deal is unlikely at this time.

Upton, 27, is batting .223/.303/.387 with 17 homers, 58 RBI, 26 stolen bases and a .691 OPS over 499 plate appearances this season. He is making $4.825 million in 2011 and is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter.

If I were the Nationals I would claim him off waivers. It seems to me that he just needs a change of scenery, he has had problems with the Rays before and he's always in trade discussions. Hes also expendable considering that Desmond Jennings will eventually take that center field spot.

There's little chance he made it all the way to the Nationals on waivers. He would have had to clear the American League teams first, and even non contending teams could possibly have claimed him because hes still young

David Wright cleared waivers, not all that unfathomable.

BJ Upton doesn't even make 5 million dollars. Wright has had injury problems lately, having a bad year and is locked in long term. Different situation.

He's still twice the player BJ is and his slump is due in large part to the ballpark he plays in. Get him out of citi Field and you've got a damn good player well worth the money he's being paid.

No he's not.

Contract is through 2012 with a Team Option for 2013.

And David Wright did not make it through Waivers. He was claimed by the Rockies but the Mets pulled him back rather than negotiate a deal. A lot of teams do that, they just put a player on to gauge the interest heading into the offseason. If shit goes south and they need to unload a player like Wright, they know the Rockies are interested.

David Wright, Mets - It's surprising that Wright cleared waivers, but it doesn't mean the Mets have interest in dealing him. Wright earns $15MM next year and can void a $16MM club option for 2013 if traded.
MLBTR from their list of who cleared waivers.

Yeah, because the Washington Post knows better than MLBTR does.

MLBTR isn't really a news reporting site.. They just take stuff from other sites/reporters and post it.
