Source: Peja Stojakovic named in talks

The New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors are in serious discussions on a five-player trade that would send Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to the Raptors for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks, a source told ESPN.com Saturday.

The deal was close to being completed Friday night, but was held up over the amount of cash the Hornets would send to the Raptors in the trade.

Still, the holdup was not believed to be insurmountable, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Stojakovic is in the final year of his contract, earning $14.25 million, and has fallen out of the rotation in New Orleans, averaging just 7.5 points in less than 15 minutes per game playing behind Marco Belinelli, whom the Hornets acquired in another trade with the Raptors during the summer.

Bayless is averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 assists as the backup point guard behind Chris Paul.

Jack, who is earning $4.6 million and has two more seasons left on his contract, has started all 13 games for the Raptors, averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 assists. But he has played an average of only 26 minutes per night, basically operating in a time-share with Jose Calderon at point guard.

Andersen, a backup center, is averaging 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds, and Banks (in the final year of his contract, making $4.85 million) has appeared in only three games this season.

According to Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com, the Raptors and New Orleans Hornets are on the verge of a five-player trade that would see Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless shipped to Toronto for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks. The deal, according to the report, was close to being completed Friday, but the amount of money the Hornets would send in the trade held up the completion. Playing out the final year of his contract, the 33-year-old Stojakovic is earning $14.25 million while averaging 7.5 points and 1 rebound per game. Bayless is averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 assists as the backup point guard. Jack, who has two more seasons left on his $4.6 million contract, has averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 assists. Andersen is averaging 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds, while Banks has appeared in only three games for the Raptors this season.
Good move by the raps IMO. They get a PG who still has potential and a big expiring contract.

What a waste of a huge expiring and a good young player for the Hornets.

The New Orleans Hornets are set to acquire a coveted quality point guard to back up Chris Paul(notes) in a five-player trade with the Toronto Raptors.

The Hornets agreed in principle Saturday to acquire Jarrett Jack(notes) plus forward-center David Andersen(notes) and point guard Marcus Banks(notes) from the Raptors for sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic(notes) and guard Jerryd Bayless(notes), according to league sources.

The hot Hornets (10-1) acquire a solid veteran to back up Chris Paul in Jack, who has averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 assists while starting in all 13 games for Toronto this season. Expect Paul to also play off the ball at times, with Jack running the point. The Raptors have wanted to trade Jack or point guard Jose Calderon(notes), who have been splitting time at the position thus far.

Andersen will add depth to the Hornets’ frontline while Banks will serve as an emergency point guard.

In Stojakovic, the Raptors get a three-time NBA All-Star in the twilight of his career. Stojakovic, who has averaged 7.5 points in six games this season, gives the Raptors a major expiring contract – the veteran is making $14.2 million in the final year of his deal.

The Hornets just acquired Bayless from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for a conditional future first-round pick on Oct. 23. Bayless struggled with his shooting with New Orleans, averaging 4.5 points on 34.7 percent shooting from the field in 11 games, and is more of a combo guard than backup point guard. With Marcus Thornton(notes) and Willie Green(notes) also on the Hornets’ roster, one of those three combo guards was expendable.

So instead of trading Peja for a piece to play next to Cp3 and keep their strong play going, they opt for a backup PG and to dump some salary. Okay. Once this hot streak for NOH dies down I guess Cp3 will be leaving sooner than I thought.

The Hornets are trying to win now, and Bayless' trade value has gone completely down since he is having another bad year. Jack will be a good back up and could see some time in the back court together with CP3.

What else were you gonna get for Bayless? Jack is a good player, and Chris Paul likes him.

MOAR EUROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Orleans should have gone after a big.
sure Jack is better suited as a back up than Bayless, but Bayless was adequate enough. they need size if they even want a chance to compete

Raptors GM: Trade adds to team core

TORONTO -- The Toronto Raptors are putting Chris Bosh behind them and looking toward the future.

A day after swinging a five-player deal with the New Orleans Hornets, Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo says he added to his team's young core and increased his financial flexibility.

Toronto swapped guards Jarrett Jack and Marcus Banks and center David Andersen for guard Jerryd Bayless and swingman Peja Stojakovic.

The Raptors lost their lone All-Star when Bosh signed with the Miami Heat last summer and are off to a 4-9 start this season. Now in his fourth season in charge, Colangelo is looking forward as he attempts to steer Toronto back into the playoffs.

"It's pretty obvious this trade was made with the future in mind," Colangelo said Sunday. "If the last four years were building around Chris Bosh, then next four years are about building without Chris Bosh. This is a step in that direction."

Stojakovic's contract expires after this season, and Colangelo said he has close to $25 million in expiring contracts. He also has more than $12 million left on a trade exception that was part of Bosh's sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat.

With the NBA's financial landscape expected to change as the league prepares for labor talks with the players, Colangelo feels good about his balance sheet.

"We've got a chance to be nimble here with respect to what the new rules look like," he said.

Along with Bayless, 23, Toronto has four other core players all under the age of 25. Guard DeMar DeRozan, 21 was the team's first-round pick last year, forward Ed Davis, 21 was a first-round pick this year, forward Amir Johnson, 23, signed a five-year contract this summer and guard Sonny Weems, 24 is the team's second-leading scorer.

"Whether or not we win games is really not the true issue right now, it's how much we're growing as an organization, how much these young kids are coming along," Colangelo said.

Done deal. I think the Hornets get the better end of this deal. Interesting to see what everyone's new roles will be.

So much for using Peja's expiring to get back a star... Seems like New Orleans rushed into this.
