A group headed by Michael Jordan will take control of the Charlotte Bobcats if approved by the NBA owners. The Charlotte Observer reports Jordan made a "huge personal financial commitment" to help make the deal happen.

Now that Charlotte is getting a new owner, Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer wonders if the team should get a new nickname.

Bonnell writes: "If Michael Jordan listens to his customers, and potential customers, he'll seriously consider a name change from 'Bobcats' once his purchase of Charlotte's NBA franchise is complete. Too many of you have emailed me with that suggestion not to think it's an issue to many Charlotteans. You didn't like Bob Johnson naming the team after himself, and you sure don't see this as a positive once Johnson is no longer majority owner. This wouldn't be cheap. I spoke with an NBA executive who estimated it would cost the franchise anywhere from $3 million to $10 million to rebrand the team."

I like Bobcats, why change it?
I'm sure most of you like it too.

I like it, but a new name and a more NBA type name wouldn't be a bad idea. Doubt they change it, though.

Maybe the Sonics,

I like the name Bobcats but Charlotte Supersonics, doesn't sound catchy to me.

Rage isn't fitting for an NBA team.

The NBA has the gayest names in the world; Magic, Lakers, Clippers, Jazz, Thunder, and Nets are all horrible.

The best team name is probably the Browns of the NFL.

it would cost them an initial fee, but a catchy name could generate a lot more if it's done right.

Blake, the Magic are named that cause Dinsey World or whatever is in Florida...er atleast I think that's why.

Lakers had that name since Minneapolis, Jazz are from New Orleans originally. So they have meanings.

I'm aware of that; however, they're somewhat gay.

I never though about the Magic being named because of lame-ass Disney though.

Yeah, you're right about the Magic. I don't really think Charlotte needs to change its name though. They definitley shouldn't become the Sonics, because that history is now with the Oklahoma City Thunder. It just wouldn't be right for Charlotte to take that.

I wouldn't mind if the Hornets returned to Charlotte, the Jazz returned to New Orleans, the Sonics stuck with the Oklahoma City franchise and then Utah could go with the Thunder/Bobcats/new name. I guess that would be hard to do though, because of the fan bases that have been built and what not. I just don't like how the Hornets left Charlotte and then a few years later they got a new team.

I was joking with the Sonics moving from Seattle, I don't know if any of you got that.

Yeah, I figured you were joking, but there I have seen some people seriously post that on other forums.
