Report: Patriots to acquire Martellus Bennett from Bears
Arun Srinivasan Mar 16, 2016 7:19 PM
The Chicago Bears are expected to trade tight end Martellus Bennett to the New England Patriots in exchange for the swapping of mid-round picks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Bennett recorded 53 receptions for 439 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games last season prior to being placed on injured reserve with fractured ribs.
Bennett, who was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and is among the NFL's best receiving tight ends, was on the trading block for the past 18 months, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Chicago recently signed fellow tight end Zach Miller to a two-year extension Monday, making the 29-year-old expendable.
Bennett will operate as the Patriots' second tight end, behind All-Pro Rob Gronkowski. He'll likely be used in twin tight end packages, a formation the Patriots implemented to perfection with Aaron Hernandez.
It's eminently possible that the Patriots could use Bennett in pass-blocking scenarios, with the offensive line capitulating during an AFC Championship Game defeat to the Denver Broncos.
