I was just watching NFL Top 10 gutsiest performances and found this quite intriguing

During a game against the Steelers, Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini suffered three broken ribs after a big hit. He went to the hospital soon after. He was awoken a few hours later by two men, one wielding a baseball bat and one carrying a large plastic bag. Alarmed, the two men told him not to worry, and the one carrying the bag pulled out what is now a flak jacket, put it on, and had the other one hit him in the ribs with the bat.

Pastorini then wore what is now a standard piece of equipment for all quarterbacks.

Actually something good to know, nice find Blake. I still remember the move from youth football to modified (middle school) ball. We were always issued rib pads to wear in youth and after years of wearing them, it was a very unnerving feeling to suddenly have to play w/o them in school.
