Someone explain to me why the Jazz are offering huge contract extensions.

Gordon Hayward and the Utah Jazz are expected to agree to an extension before the Oct. 31 deadline.

Hayward's deal is likely to be more lucrative than the four-year, $49 million extension teammate Derrick Favors signed last week.

Hayward has a lot of admirers in front offices around the NBA and would be a highly coveted restricted free agent target if a deal is not reached.

Close to that. Hayward doesn't get very much exposure in Utah, and wasn't featured as much as he should have been because of guys like Al Jefferson. He scored 14 pts a game last year in just 29 minutes, that's pretty damn good. He's not a guy who you can give the ball and let him go to work, but off the ball he's about as elite as a 22 year old can be.

He was in the top 8% of NBA players in spot up shooting. He was the definition of automatic from the 3pt arc shooting 47% in spot up situations. He was in the top 16% in coming off of screens. He was also great at cutting into the lane, and shot nearly 60% at the rim. He can also distribute the ball.

But the biggest misconception of him as a player, he's actually a serviceable defender. He's a very good iso defender, is good at defending the pick and roll, and gets around screens to contest shots.

Not high usage percentages, but guys definitely get paid based off of what they could be.

This pretty much seems the standard now a days. Big contracts are too much, but it isn't a massive overpay.

The Utah Jazz are far apart on contract extension talks with Gordon Hayward and do not have a baseline for an agreement, according to sources.

Hayward has an Oct. 31 deadline to reach a new deal. If an extension is not reached by then, Hayward will become a restricted free agent next offseason.

Two teams with ample salary-cap space have head coaches Boston's Brad Stevens and Phoenix's Jeff Hornacek who have history with Hayward and think highly of his talent.

Hayward, 23, averaged 14.1 points and 3.1 rebounds last season

The Utah Jazz and Gordon Hayward were unable to agree upon a contract extension and he will become a restricted free agent this offseason.

Hayward was not seeking a four-year, max contract worth more than $60 million, according to reporting from ESPN's Marc Stein.

Stein believes Hayward will find a deal in that neighborhood in free agency with teams like the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics having cap space

I personally don't think he's worth anything of that money, but due to inflation, everyone is getting paid out of their asses
